Breast Lump
« on: July 13, 2025, 05:10:43 PM »

Hi , long story but I had to reduce my HRT estrogen due to spotting I’ve got an appointment soon for a pelvic scan
I reduced my patch a few weeks ago , however last night my right boob was so Achey it felt like I’d been bruised , after having a feel there is a small lump I’m
freaking out as a year ago I had a lump on the same boob but just above my nipple this is on the side . I’m trying to get a Dr appointment, last year I had a mammogram and scan for the lump on top of my boob and the radiologist said I’ve got scattered cysts in my right boob

I’m just wondering if the change of estrogen dose has caused this ?

Yes cysts can be painful, I have had a few, they are almost always benign but can be tender.

I can only imagine what you must be going through but please try not to worry yourself sick, the vast majority of breast lumps turn out to be benign.

I think it is unlikely reducing your estrogen would have caused this, however it may have caused your breasts to shrink a little, making the lump easier to feel.

Obviously getting this checked out is the priority, however once anything sinister has been ruled out it is worth bearing in mind that reducing a therapeutic estrogen dose is seldom the best course of action to manage spotting on hormone therapy.

Thankyou for your replies I reduced my patch dosage with the advice of my menopause Dr as my Endometrium is 5.3 so I’m awaiting a pelvic scan
It would seem that my right breast is full of harmless cysts . Last year the lump that I had wasn’t painful unlike this current one
The pain feels like a bruise
I am worried it just seems to be one thing after another I’ve been on HRT 4 years

It's probably a reaction to your alteration of regime.  Why would the advice be to drop the dose  :-\ and how long will U need to wait for the appt.?

I’ve been referred to Gynaecology as the pelvic scan revealed 5.3 thickening . The spotting has stopped since reducing my patch so the Gynaecologist wasn’t overly concerned & advised another pelvic scan

It’s not that which is worrying me at the moment it’s the lump in my breast

You are always doing the right thing in getting it checked out. I felt a small lump/bump in my left breast above my nipple (to the top left) last year and also had bruise type pain, I couldn’t lay on that side in bed. I got it checked and  an ultrasound done and the doctor said it was due to hormonal changes. I was told to take evening primrose oil daily and eventually the pain went away. I started peri symptoms about a month after this. He also said that when you feel pain that’s normally a good thing in that it’s nothing serious. It’s when it’s painless that they are concerned. Hopefully you’ll be fine and it will be a cyst or similar x

Thankyou little Claire ,I’m glad that you didn’t have anything sinister 🙏 I felt the lump yesterday and now I’m scared to touch it maybe a bit of denial on my part
It seems to be never ending if it’s not one thing it’s another
But I agree it’s so important to get things investigated early .

I can totally sympathise with you, I didn’t want to keep touching mine either it just made the worry start all over again. Have you been in touch with the doctor today to get an appointment? They are normally quite quick with things like this I was seen at my gp the same day I rang and then was referred on the 2 week pathway but got an appointment a week later. It can be really worrying until you find out what it is 🙏

You don't have to keep feeling the area now that it's being dealt with. It won't change anything and is likely to increase your distress.

Before I had risk reducing mastectomies I could never bear to touch my breasts for fear of finding a lump, and found it helpful to wash around the area with a sponge or shower puff rather than my hands.

Obviously this is not a good strategy long term but can help protect your mental health during a time limited period of vulnerability.

I’ve had several lumps in my late thirties which turned out to be breast cysts. They drained them with a syringe. So if yours are cysts the bruised feeling could be because of the pressure of being filled with fluid. I think mine were due to changing hormones due to the timing. Most lumps are benign so try not to worry but of course always best to get them checked.

My lump was felt on palpation so I underwent a lumpectomy.  The lump was never seen on mammogram or ultrasound.

Mum developed lumps after eating shellfish on several occasions over 5 years, each lump was removed and put under histology.  All OK fortunately.  At 65 a routine mammogram showed a lump which was removed but she didn't require any treatment, I do wonder after all these years [she's 98] whether surgery was necessary.

We are all different.  Don't keep prodding, it will make the area sore ;-)

Thankyou all for your reassuring replies , lumps send me into panic , I did feel around again and can’t feel the lump or maybe I’ve convinced myself it’s not there it’s still
Achey though .  My mum had a few cysts removed from her breasts when she was younger they gave a general and opened her up she had a few small scars .
I’m still trying to get a Dr’s appointment I’m sure most of the them are my surgery are on their summer hols

I had breast lumps from my 30s and saw the consultant every 3 months for 10 years each time having a cyst aspirated. The last one was in my mid 50s. I always noticed them because they were tender, sometimes the consultant found one I'd missed. It's worrying even if you are prone to cysts. I found my 10 years of consultant checks reassuring, an expert check. They do tend to be sore though. I hope it's nothing to worry about and you can forget about it
