Return of menopause symptoms since increasing levothyroxine

I have hypothyroidism and I have been slowly trying to get my levothyroxine to a therapeutic level.  I increased three weeks ago and this weekend, I have had a return of my worst menopause symptoms since I got settled on my HRT. Anxiety, breast pain, palpitations.

Do I need to adjust my Sandrena ( currently 1.5 mg / day ) to compensate? Should I reduce or increase? My GP says Levo and hrt do not affect each other.

Your GP is not correct, whilst thyroid conditions and replacement are not my area, there is definitely potential for a change in one system to affect the other.

The human body is complex and it is reductive and simplistic to think you can alter one thing and it not have any downstream effects.

This doesn't mean every woman would notice a change in estrogen related symptoms or need a dose change, but certainly your experience shouldn't be dismissed.

If you were using patches or tablets a blood estradiol level may be helpful, particularly if you had a "before" for comparison, but with gel you are flying blind, and therefore I would suggest increasing in small increments until you feel adequately treated, being mindful that your endometrial protection keeps up if appropriate.

Thyroxine and oestrogen are both endocrine hormones so yes, it's possible for one to interact with the other and lots of women find they need to adjust their thyroxine amount when adding in HRT.

BUT

Anxiety and palpitations can also be thyroid related especially when changing Levo doses as you've recently done. It takes several weeks for thyroid hormones to stabilise so I personally wouldn't change anything right now.


Please don't rely solely on your GP to give you information about thyroid issues. The NHS is notoriously bad when it comes to this area of medicine. Do your own research and inform yourself
