Experiences with Mirena as part of HRT
« on: June 17, 2025, 09:03:02 AM »

I may have to have a Mirena coil fitted as vaginal Utrogestan is not offering me enough uterine protection. Would be interested to hear your experiences of the Mirena as part of your HRT regime.

MayB put the 'mirena coil' in2 the search box to read appropriate threads of which there are several.  Make notes ;-). and let us know how you get on.

I've had one since Jan, it's been great for me. No side effects (unlike utro) and no bleeding except a bit the first couple of months.

I had one fitted 2yrs or so ago following post menopausal bleeding (I was 10yrs post meno) after starting HRT. Gynae suggested having a Mirena as Utrogestan evidently not sufficient to stop endometrium from thickening. I didn't actually have any issues with Utrogestan in itself.

The fitting of the coil was done at the same time as a biopsy, it was a little uncomfortable but only fleetingly. I was fortunate to have no pains/cramps after and it was comfortable immediately. I did suffer with spotting for about 12 weeks, not constant and it lessened over that time.

For me, the Mirena has been very successful and I'd have another, if allowed, when this one reaches end of life.

Good luck with your research and decision making

It's great to hear it's worked for you both - sheila99 and Suziemc. I was a bit worried in case I get side effects from it. Yes it does seem that Utrogestan doesn't protect the uterus so well but I have been on it five years now. I am very nervous as have to have a hysteroscopy and polypectomy in the coming weeks. I may well post separately about that. Thanks so much for your input ladies. It makes me feel better!! ;D

And thanks CLKD I have looked at the posts!  :)
