Urine Infection
« on: May 20, 2025, 04:01:20 PM »

I thought I had bad back pain and sciatica for the last month. A couple of days I experienced bladder discomfort on top and after testing blood and leucocytes were found in my urine. I'm currently on Nitrofuratonin antibiotics to treat it. I'm on day two and pain is still severe. I'm flying out of the country next week so want to get it sorted but I keep reading that back pain and flank pain are associated with kidney infection not just urinary tract infection. I'm concerned Nitrofuratonin may not be strong enough.

No protein was found in my urine. Has anyone else had pain radiating to the back and sides just for a uti or does that only happen when it's gone to the kidneys. This is my first urine infection at 62.

Nitrofuratonin is the correct antibiotic for your symptoms, give the antibiotics time to do their work and hopefully that will be that.
Your symptoms are also very similar to Vaginal Atrophy (GSM) including blood in urine and pain, might be worth considering this also.

Sounds like vaginal atrophy from where I'm sitting.  Make sure that U take a copy of your prescription: 7 days treatment : with you as well as buying over the counter Gina from Boots to start using for atrophy - this mimics repeated urine infection-type symptoms really really well.

Also take pain relief which should ease the nip as the urine flow shuts off.  ABs will ease symptoms but won't replace oestrogen which often causes VA. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks. I've been using Ovestin twice a  week and on low dose Kliovance but may be I should increase Ovestin use. Day 3 on antibiotics and still waiting for the pain to subside. I'm hoping to wake  up tomorrow feeling it has lessened.

If it's a true infection 7 days should be prescribed.

Up the 'ovestin' every night for 2-3 weeks and take pain relief to ease those infection-type feelings.

I've always found antibiotics for UTI fairly fast working. I believe flank pain is consistent with a kidney infection. I think you'd have other symptoms though. When I was admitted to hospital with a UTI and suspected kidney infection, I was peeing thick blood and I was nauseas. I had intravenous ABs and they worked fairly quickly. I'm sure older women need at least a 5 day course.

Are you feeling any better? I first saw your post about a week ago when I was suffering very similar symptoms. I haven't had a definite UTI for several years since I started Vagifem. Since then, mild symptoms had always been solved by increasing my use of Vagifem and taking ibuprofen/drinking bicarb of soda dissolved in water. Last week it was suddenly worse with throbbing around my hip/groin and sciatica style back  pain. A nurse at my practice did a dipstick test but didn't find much but asked if I wanted to send a sample away.  I don't have the result yet because of the bank holiday but I am now expecting it to be negative. I treated it with increased use of vagifem. I got a slight spotting (mainly brown) and a tiny bit of red but that has stopped now. I felt quite rotten on Saturday but things are much better now. I am also 62 but have been on Evorel conti and Vagifem for about 4/5 years now.

All urine samples should be sent to a Lab for growing.

I've got bilateral bursitis which I thought was sciatica  ::) ....
