Post Menopause breast pain and fullness
« on: March 26, 2025, 05:15:15 PM »

My menopause was over some years ago -  I started HRT in 2017, taking 2-3 pumps estrogel and one to two micronised progesterone capsules

Recently, in the past month or so, my breasts feel quite tender and much fuller/heavier. I haven't had this since 2017.... it started to happen after a severe reaction to antibiotic therapy, but I can't see how that would affect my breasts...

I had bloods done towards the end of January as follows:
Serum progesterone level 15.9 nmol/L [13.1 - 46.3];
Serum oestradiol level 104 pmol/L [114.0 - 332.0]; Oestradiol ranges shown for follicular phase; Below low reference limit
So both are on the low side. I've been taking 3 pumps of the estrogel.

Wondering if it's just low oestradiol?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Sandj. Your post is interesting to me as the last two courses of antibiotics I've had have made my breasts feel full with sore nipples. I'm in my seventies now so it was a strange feeling for me to experience again! I'm on HRT but the breast change was purely antibiotics related I feel. My GP said he'd not heard of this happening but as it had occurred after both courses of antibiotics he suggested I should report it via the yellow card system. Maybe yours is linked to that too

That's very interesting Taz - I couldn't find anything online linking the two, but maybe there is one given your experience! May I ask what antibiotics you were on? I was on Azithromycin and Rifampicin. How long did your pain/ fullness take to ease?(Hopefully it did!).

I was on clarithromycin for a chest infection and it also happened when on nitrofurantoin twice.

Thanks Taz - how long did it take for things to go back to 'normal'?

It was around two weeks after I finished the antibiotics. How did the severe reaction affect you?
