Diarrhea ,hrt gel, thyroid
« on: March 25, 2025, 08:33:11 AM »

Firstly sorry about the title, just wanted to get straight to the point.
So since upping my oestrogel to x3 pumps daily I have had diarrhea every single day.I do not know whether it is the cause as I've recently had my thyroid bloods done and my TSH has risen quite a lot(should of gone down with my increase) so I'm not sure if :
Hrt is causing my diarrhea and my rise in TSH or if it's something completely different like my brand of levothyroxine.
If others have experience diarrhea with hrt did it stop eventually?it's only been two weeks of the increase for me.
Also if any one is on levothyroxine did their TSH go up when using the gel?
Any advice seriously appreciated.

First of all, don't worry, it's a common problem.

I've had IBS forever and a gastroenterologist told me that HRT (both oral and transdermal) affects bile composition for many women and it causes diarrhoea.  It's not uncommon for menopausal women to suddenly develop bile acid diarrhoea too.  There are a lot of oestrogen receptors in the gut and they react to HRT to varying degrees.

It's not uncommon for women using HRT to develop IBS (usually with diarrhoea) for the first time post menopause.  It can set off gallbladder problems too.

I'm not sure about the thyroid side but I have read that thyroid problems/medication can also trigger IBS.

I hope that helps.

Thank you so much for replying. Its very difficult trying to work out of it's the hrt or the thyroid medication causing my problems (as I started both within a week of each other). Can I ask-if it's the hrt gel will these symptoms stop in the future or is that just the way my body is from now on?you see it didn't happen with one pump or two pumps it's only started since I've gone to three,or do you think it would be wise to drop down to two pumps to see if the diarrhea stops?
I haven't even done my gel today as I really cannot stand going back and forth to the toilet 20 times a day, obviously I have to take my levothyroxine.I only really started the hrt to give me some bone/cardiovascular protection as I've recently found out I already have osteoarthritis and I've had hypertension for years.I just don't know what to do for the best.

That's the issue with starting more than one thing at once. You now have to tinker with both things to find out which is causing the problem.

How long have you been on Levo and which brand? Is the latest thyroid function tests a GP one or a private one?

My thyroid medication is a whole other story,I will try and run through it the best I can.
From this date forward I am on the Teva brand)only started Teva today after a month on mercury pharma that made my tummy issues ten times worse).I've been telling my doctors for a while that the levothyroxine is causing me issues (but now I'm concerned it's the hrt) as today Ibe still had diarrhea, but I've had Teva before and didn't have an issue (at the start of my hrt/thyroid journey. Now I'm just thinking the estrogen has built up so it's that giving me constant tummy type it's both levothyroxine and hrt.Ive been on both gradually increasing dose on both for four months. My last levothyroxine TSH levels was 4 but I've just had a blue horizon test done and it's 12 so it's gone up,I think due to the tummy issues (maybe not absorbing it).Now I've finally been given Teva I hope to bring my TSH back down,I haven't had an increase so still on 100mg the same as I was on before,it's so confusing and complicated because I cannot work it out,I thought it was the medication, but what if I'm wrong.I feel so poorly, tired, weak,no motivation but what do I do next?stop hrt and go from there hoping the Teva will work as planned or drop my dose of gel and see if that helps. My t3 is super low,I have near enough zero testosterone (I got my hormones tested as well).I'm just lacking in everything .

The main difference between Mercury Pharma and Teva is that Mercury Pharma contains lactose and Teva contains mannitol. If you get on better with one brand ask your GP to add the brand to your prescription so you only get dispensed that particular one.

Can you post your TSH, T4 and T3 results with ranges. Maybe your last 2 results. If you're not absorbing the levo properly then your T4 and T3 levels will reflect this.

With a TSH of 12 and low T3 I'm not surprised you don't feel well. Tired, weak and no motivation scream hypo to me.
