Am I normal?
« on: February 25, 2025, 07:32:12 PM »

Hello I’m fairly new here (please be gentle) I’m 50. I have the Mirena coil and haven’t had a period since around 2009. No real peri/menopause symptoms that I know of. Been stable mentally and take 20mg Citalopram daily for anxiety.

I’m currently waiting on NHS for an MRI scan on my spine due to ongoing issues. I understand there are looking for an autoimmune condition linked to my Crohn’s (my Crohn’s is good at the moment, last colonoscopy showed no ulceration). I’m also waiting to see a private ENT consultant next week re the nosebleeds/blood in one nostril that’s been ongoing since January 2024. Since I made this appointment less than 2 weeks ago I appear to have developed symptoms similar to TMJ.

I also suffer from migraine (started in December 2020 and diagnosed October 2022) I get regular migraines (at least one a week at the moment)

I just feel like I’ve lost my spark a bit just recently. Given the chance I’d quite happily stay in bed all day. I still go out. I walk the dog every day and I work 3 days a week (office work). I swim twice a week usually too.

My anxiety has been ok. I’ve had a wobble health anxiety wise due to the nosebleeds and TMJ-like symptoms  but a good friend knocked some sense into me and ordered me to stop googling, which I have.

I take magnesium daily to help with the migraines and within the last week I’ve started taking vitamin D and today I’ve started collagen powder.

I have a good diet with plenty of fruit and veg.

I feel tired. Not bone achingly tired but always feel like I could have a nap.

I feel like every day I add another thing to the list of ailments.

Is some of this normal perimenopausal stuff? Anyone else feel similar?

When did U last have a full blood count to include thyroid function and VitD tests?  Tiredness can be caused by either of these .  When my VitD levels were low I would do 20 mins weeding then have to sit still for 2 hours.

Peri menopause can cause lots of different issues ........ some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary to chart progress.

So yes U R normal from where I'm sitting  ;)

MayB then start VitD daily from the Chemist.  It won't do any harm but may well help.  Let us know.

What were you told about thyroid function results?

Sounds normal to me. I can go for a few weeks feeling great and no symptons of anything but it never lasts. It's just getting older, things start to go wrong and need fixing, I call it wear and tear.  It feels depressing when we have ailments one after the other and it does cause anxiety but it sounds like you are doing all the right things to make the most of it and are living a healthy lifestyle. The winter months don't help our health in this country and the sun always seems to lift my spirits and my wellbeing.
You have got a lot to deal with at the moment so don't be hard on yourself, have a nap if you need it, keep looking after yourself as you're doing.
TMJ is common when you are feeling stressed, I grind my teeth at night when worried about things and it causes earache and makes my tinnitus worse, it all stops when the worrying does. The migraines could be linked to worry too.
It's so frustrating waiting for hospital appointments and we know the NHS is in a bad way at the moment, but hopefully once you've been seen you'll get the reassurance and help you need.
All this and going through menopause is a lot of strain mentally and physically on our bodies. So I think it's totally normal to feel any way we like.

Certainly the tiredness, loss of spark and particularly the onset of migraines are suggestive of declining ovarian hormones.

At 50 you can be presumed to be at least perimenopausal based on age alone.

You have nothing to lose and much to gain from a trial of hormone therapy.

If you were interested in confirming menopause biochemically you could have a FSH test however this would only be clinically helpful if you were considering whether contraception is still needed.

Thank you for the replies.

I’ve been taking vitamin D, triple magnesium and collagen for a week now.

My TMJ like symptoms are still there with some numbness/tingling in my hands. I’m seeing the dentist tomorrow. My left cheek appears to be ulcerated and scarred like I’ve been biting it, but if I have it must have been in my sleep.

The ENT cauterised a blood vessel in my nose as he thought it was causing the nosebleeds. He looked in my ears and mouth as well as I mentioned the TMJ symptoms and he advised to see my dentist

I’ve also requested a GP appointment. I swear they must see my name and think ‘what now?’ They must think I’m making things up.

I can’t shake the anxiety that it’s something bad.

In other news I have my MRI on Sunday to look for spondylarthritis.

Hi Moonfish,

I wonder if the bone tiredness you describe is part of the migraine? Extreme tiredness is a common precursor to a migraine attack that can go on for a day or so before the headache, etc. begins. It's not really talked about in relation to migraines but it's common. If you're getting migraines every week, could this be the cause?
