Generic estradiol prescribed
« on: February 04, 2025, 01:57:35 PM »

Hi everyone, hope all is ok with you all. I haven't been on here for a while as I have been so much better having switched from evorel conti to a mirena and estradot.

Anyway estradot is out of stock and I asked if I could have evorel instead since id had it before, but the prescription has been changed for the generic estrogen. I think this means that the pharmacy can issue what they have in stock. I just wondered if it is possible to request the pharmacy to give me evorel or whether each month it will be pot luck. The pharmacy have told me they have evorel in stock.

If your prescription is generic the pharmacy are not obliged to supply a particular brand. If there is a medical reason why you require a specific brand you would have to ask your prescriber to prescribe this by name.

I would always advise people to have their prescriptions written generically (unless a specific brand is genuinely needed) because shortages are common, particularly around HRT as demand has increased with growing awareness and patient advocacy, but supply not so much, and since Brexit there have been bottle necks in the supply of many medicines.

If you are prescribed one specific brand there is a much higher risk of going without if there is a shortage, or facing a stressful scramble to get something else, than if that flexibility is built into your prescription.
