Continuous progesterone in perimenopause
« on: February 01, 2025, 06:30:02 PM »

I am on Oestrogel (2 pumps) and Utrogestan (100mg) which was initially prescribed for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. I tolerate it really well and it helps me sleep, which is great. I mentioned to the GP (menopause specialist) when I had my 3 month review that I missed it on the nights I don't take it. She said it was fine to take every day- 100mg on days 1-14 and then 200mg for the other days.

My Q is: do I really need the 200mg on days 15-28? Could I just keep on the 100mg which I find works well for me? Also, I if take 100mg daily do I need to stop for 3 days (25-28) or can I take it all the time? I'm confused and I can't get another appointment for a while. I have been having a period but less heavy than usual which is great. Even better if I had none at all! I'm 49 and my cycle is still regular.

Thanks for any thoughts.

100mg every night is perfectly adequate for endometrial protection with 2 pumps of gel.

The BMS have a table showing suggested doses of progesterone which you may find helpful, however treatment should ultimately be individualised and these are not set in stone.

You may continue to have some bleeding with continuous progesterone as unfortunately this is not strong enough to get rid of natural periods, however this may be acceptable for you in order to reap the benefits of stable and consistent dosing.
