Is bleeding a sign of low oestrogen?
« on: November 14, 2024, 07:55:14 PM »

Hope someone can help. I’m 50 and have been on HRT since I was 43. I was doing great with Oestrogel (4 pumps) and Utrogestan (100mcg every night) for years but really felt awful within about a week of the packaging change. I had insomnia, palpitations and weird numb patches on my legs after changing. So I asked my GP if I could switch to patches. I switched to Oestrodot 100mcg patches and at the same time my GP realised I should have been on a higher dose of Utrogestan so she upped me to 200mcg at night. The higher Utrogestan dose zapped me orally so I switched to vaginal and it’s a bit better.
Anyway about 3 months after starting the patches I bled so went to my Gp, got referred for a scan but all was normal. The gyn said if it continues I could try a Mirena coil.
It has come back this week-very light bleeding, not enough to need a pad or anything. I really don’t want the coil as I had one years ago and didn’t love it.
I have also not felt as good on the patches as I did with the original gel and I just wonder if the bleeding and feeling rubbish means I’m not absorbing the patch well.
Thanks if you’ve got this far! Any ideas what I could do? I’m not hugely concerned about the bleeding, it’s more feeling flat on the patches.

It's probably a good idea to get your estrogen bloods run so you can see if you are absorbing okay.

If you still get periods, test during your period when your own E is lowest so you can best see what you are consistently getting from HRT.

It's very normal to have bleeding within 3 months of increasing your E or changing products and any bleeding within those 3 months should be discounted.

Bleeding can be from too much E, or from too little E as well. And also too little P. Which is why you need to do some bloods. If your GP doesn't want to run bloods, you can get them done via Medichecks.com or similar.

Good to know Joziel thanks. I don’t have periods as I’m on Utrogestan continuously. I haven’t asked my GP but I didn’t think they check E levels so I think I’ll use the company you suggested and see how I get on.

Hi I know it’s been a while since you posted this thread but was wondering if you happened to know what batch of Oestrogel you were on?  Just curious as I had a huge relapse with my symptoms round about then too. I was convinced that it was a dodgy batch

I’m not on Oestrogel any more-I use Estrodot patches. I used to use the old style Oestrogel but when the packaging changed to the cylinder style packaging I felt terrible-night sweats, insomnia and weird numb patches on my legs so I asked to switch to patches and felt better immediately. I’ve no idea what the batch number of Oestrogel was I’m afraid.

Thanks anyway, it’s the cylindrical bottles I seem to have an issue with too.  I submitted a complaint but the manufacturer came back saying there was no problem with it.  I’m thinking about changing to something else as I feel I can’t rely on it.
