I always get bad migraines if I take progesterone orally so I used a Marina IUD for five years from age 50-55.  This worked very well with oral estrogen for menopause symptoms.  Five years ago my IUD expired and it was removed so I decide to stop the HRT as I was past most of the menopause symptoms.  However a recent DEXA scan showed that I had osteoporosis.  One option my GP suggested was re starting HRT for bone health.  I am happy do do this but don't really like the idea of another Marina IUD insertion at age 60 !   I believe there are vaginal progesterone preparations but they are off label for HRT. (Prometrium, cyclogest and Utrogeston vaginal tablets).  Has anyone tried this way of getting progesterone into the system and any side effects or issues ?  Many thanks :-)

Hi!  mayB look at the UK Osteoporosis support Charity for advice?  What encouraged U to have the DEXA scan?

I expect that someone will be along re the progesterone delivery into the body.

I don't think your age is a problem for a mirena, I had my first one a couple of months ago aged 64. Most people are fine with vaginal utro though for me I was doped all day and awake much of the night (no side effects from the mirena). The other problem is that vaginal use is off licence for hrt. Utrogestan is fine vaginally, it's used that way in the rest of Europe but many are now getting substitutes instead of utrogeston and we don't know if they work vaginally or not. Cyclogest is OK but not licensed for hrt so your gp may not prescribe it.

Thank you for your thoughtful replies :-). I love this website :-)  Good to know that others still use Marina IUD in their 60's.  I will discuss vaginal progesterone and the possibility of another Marina IUD with my GP.
