« on: January 03, 2025, 12:07:24 PM »

Hello, Im new here. GP prescribed Dermovate cream for my burning vagina/redness etc , said its VA. GP advised to apply a thing layer outside vagina and some inside. I have done this and its still burning. Has anyone else had experience of this, I am so anxious.

 :welcomemm:

Vaginal atrophy can be painful and troublesome until appropriate treatment is prescribed.  What does the packet suggest that Dermovate is used for? How much info did the GP give you, was there much discussion?

Vagifem
Ovestin/estriol
Gina

All have good reviews, Vagifex not as often.  The idea is to insert the product into the vagina every night for 2-3 weeks.  Some ladies require it nightly for longer though many GPs aren't keen - we cannot overdose on oestrogen and the leaflet in the boxes is out of date.

Some find vagifem with a smear of estriol on the outer areas stops itching and soreness.  There are products: "Sylc" and 'Yes' to apply externally too.

Gina is over the counter for ladies aged 50+

Do read the threads on the Forum.  Make notes ;-).  Let us know how you get on.  I suggest ringing the surgery today and asking for 'vagifem'.  U don't need any examinations or blood tests for this.

Hi thanks for that information.
Been taking estridol pessary for about 2 years, its all suddenly gone dry, sore and burning like fire.

Dermovate was perscribed to calm it all down then a review on future products, thats the plan I guess. Ive had three examinations over the past week and seen three GP's as I also had severe burning from using replens moisturiser from boots.  I have no itching just burning inside the vagina and red sore and swollen , also red and sore outside.

Will look into your recommended products. Thanks  :)

Get rid of the replens.

Your GP should have prescribed appropriate VA treatment by now.

As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry: inside and out; scalp, deep in the ears, nostrils, eyes, vagina as well as muscles may become lax = aches and pains  ::)

How often do U use the pessaries, I suggest putting 1 into the vagina now and another this evening and continue for at least 7 nights.

Dermovate really, really doesn't belong in the vagina.

Unless your ovaries used to secrete clobetasol in their heydey, then it is unlikely to be an effective treatment for hypoestrogenism.

I would simply use as much topical estrogen as you need using both cream and pessaries together, twice a day if necessary.

If it is not responding to therapeutically dosed estrogen, you may be dealing with a different diagnosis for which seeing a vulval skin specialist may help.

I would also think about your systemic estrogen levels - if you are on hormone therapy is it meeting your needs, and if you aren't then is that the result of a well informed choice, is it for medical reasons or simply lack of knowledge/access.

My advice would be to search this forum for Dermovate, there are a lot of posts regarding its use that it will give you an informed decision on going forwards which I think will be helpful to you.

Dermovate is a corticosteroid won't replace oestrogen but will definitely help soothe the burning and decrease the redness.

Once the burning and redness has subsided, the use of estriol cream should help keep things under control.

Posting this from my own personal experience  :)

I would never advise anyone to do this.
This is the exact scenario that caused issues for me which then required a steroid to calm things down.

Yes thanks, once the burning and redness has calmed I will see GP and sort out eastriol cream etc....  :)

GP being careful as Vagirux pessary and replens have made a bad situation worse ( using pessary for about 2 years , no other HRT as It did not suit me )

Any steroid should be used with care and certainly not long term. When I had radiation treatment I was instructed to [not advised] to use the tip of my first finger on the area which appeared as though the breast had sat in the sun for too long!  And no longer than for 3-5 days.

I would suspect that the replens is the basic cause of aggravation as well as mayB your own hormone levels dropping = dryness.  MayB stop everything for 48 hours then begin estriol or vagifem nightly.  When my vulva is dry and itchy I use KY Jelly externally [which is where 'yes' or 'sylc' might help]
as well as the estriol/ovestin.

When my symptoms niggle I put a dose up there mid-afternoon as well as a smear around the out area; again at night.  It's Trial and Error for us all particularly GPs  >:(

Do U have an appt. booked or R U able to see a GP or Nurse Practitioner within 36 hours?

Did you use any of the Dermovate internally?

No, not internally as such. I made sure that the dermovate was spread around properly covering all the red bits including the entrance to my vagina but I never actually inserted it.

I hope you get some relief soon  :)

If the pain and soreness is on the outside / vulva then emuvate or dermovate iontment - not cream can be used to calm it down . every day for 3 weeks - thin layer and then ease off .
No soap , no knickers , use hydromol in the bath or shower - put thick layer on to protect.

Hope that helps.
