Coming off hrt whist awaiting hysteroscopy
« on: January 07, 2025, 03:03:00 PM »

After 18 months on 100mg utrogestan and 1 pump oestrogel daily continuously age 54, started bleeding on and off and cramp pain. Gp sent me for ultrasound, showed 9mm thick womb lining, awaiting hysteroscopy for biopsy.
Aiming to come off hrt or at least have a break for a while, not decided if will go back on in future.
Can I just stop it or will I bleed heavier? Am I better to wait until after hysteroscopy?
So stressed convinced it's C waiting is driving me crazy. :'(

Health anxiety and the 'C' word raise problems a lot on the Forum.

Hopefully some1 will be along about stopping HRT, regardless of waiting for investigations.  Any unexpected bleeding needs to B investigated.

H MaggieMay I have just had a scam which showed a possible polyp and 10mm lining. Now on 2 week pathway. Freaks you out when you see the word but my GP was reassuring and said not to jump to worst possible scenario it is just what they have to do with the guidelines and HRT can cause these issues. She has not said I need to stop HRT. She said that’s the specialist will decide best way forward and it may involve hysteroscopy to remove polyp and a biopsy just to check all is ok. Trying to stay positive and not worry overly but it is stressful. Big hugs x

I had 11.7 mm lining plus several polyps. I stayed on my HRT whilst waiting for the hysteroscopy and biopsy. Stopping will likely trigger a bleed and I wondered whether if I was bleeding, it would somehow obscure the view with the scope. All was fine and I had a Mirena fitted to hopefully stop the thickening re-occurring.

I know it's hard but try not to worry, this is not an uncommon occurrence for women on HRT. Hopefully you have been put on the 2 week pathway and will be treated soon.

I had a coil fitted in October but at the 6 week coil check the practice nurse couldn’t find the strings so referred me for a scan. The scan showed that my endometrium had doubled in thickness since having the coil fitted, and I’ve been awaiting an appointment with gynae. I wasn’t told to change or stop any of my hrt whilst waiting. My understanding is that any change of hrt doses or stopping it can trigger bleeding. I’ve had a phone call today for hysteroscopy and biopsy tomorrow  and was told to let them know if I’m bleeding as then the appointment would need to be changed.

Coming off HRT is a bit of an over-reaction to what is probably just a too thick lining. You just need to figure out a progestin or P dosage which stops the lining build up.

Many women are not on enough P to counter the E they are absorbing because no one tests anything and this is all a sh*t show.

 :welcomemm:

Hi Maggiemay

As per the others - no need to stop HRT while waiting for your hysteroscopy. It may be (unless it's changed) that the official medical advice is to do so but that docs seemingly can decide whether or not to adhere to this.

For example over 10 years ago I was advised this when I had abnormal bleeding - to stop HRT prior to hysteroscopy but I got a second opinion and was able to remain on it.

More recently a couple of years ago or maybe less, after similar spotting, my lovely gynae GP said something along the lines of "What I should tell you is to stop HRT and see if the bleeding stops, but I'm not going to do that"!

Re your bleeding - on the whole, it is much more likely to be worrying to have an abnormal bleed post-menopause in the absence of HRT than if you are taking it when, as joziel says it is most likely the balance between oestrogen and progesterone that is causing your lining to thicken. I understand it is always a bit of a worry though.

As a matter of interest how long had you been period free before you started HRT. Had you been 12 months without a natural period (and not taking mini pill or anything)?

Hope it all goes well and try to stop worrying in the meantime.

Hurdity x
