Told to stop HRT before GA
« on: November 18, 2024, 01:54:53 PM »

Hi, I was referred for an ultrasound due to some bleeding between periods and the scan showed a 15mm thickness in the lining of my womb. Next morning GP called and gave me appt for hysteroscopy two days later. Had this done, took ibuprofen an hour beforehand and to my surprise hardly any pain at all. But was very anxious because of the speed this appt  was given to me. Turns out I have a small polyp and it was giving an impression of thickened womb lining. During the hysteroscopy I was asked if I wanted it removed there and then under a local anaesthetic but I was so jittery and scared I opted for go back at later date to have it done under a general anaesthetic. The doctor who done the hysteroscopy told me come off the HRT under until I have the op.
I’m waiting for a telephone appt with my doctor to ask whether this is normal procedure to come off HRT altogether in prep for a GA? And also when can i start retaking my HRT. Been off it 3 days now and luckily no side effects yet 🤞🏼
In the meantime i thought I would ask on here if anyone had a similar experience of being asked to come off the HRT before a GA?
Thanks x

U don't need to stop HRT!  How long would you need to wait for the procedure with the added risk of it being cancelled several times?  I am sure that others will be along with advice, but personally I wouldn't be stopping it.

Thanks, I thought that too.  I stopped the HRT 3 days ago thinking the op was an emergency one to be done within a week or so because I was meant to go straight to the treatment centre after the hysteroscopy for a pre op assessment. But I was so anxious my hubby took me home and doctor said I would get a call to book it instead.
I haven’t seen any other posts on here saying no HRT before a general anaesthetic so it’s made me question whether I’ve done the right thing coming off it. Fingers crossed the doctor can clarify 🤞🏼

If we were admitted as an emergency medical staff may not even know that we use HRT  :-\.  When U get the appt then ring the Dept to check what their policy might be and ask the question ...... 'do I really need to ... "  then let us know ;-)

No, you don't need to, although there may be a small increase in thrombotic risk if you are on oral estrogen.

Premenopausal women are not all put into chemical menopause before having elective surgery.

Slouisec76 can I ask how you are getting on? I too have a thickened lining and waiting for a hysteroscopy to remove a polyp.  I had a biopsy of the lining done in December where they then said I’d have to have the polyp removed and have had a notification for a ‘face to face appointment’ at the end of this month. That has really scared me but I’m hoping that it’s just for the hysteroscopy. I’ve had to email outpatients to ask and I’ve also told them I want a GA. Still waiting to hear! Menopause has made me super anxious.
