Lots of people continue to have ovarian function beyond the average age of 51.
Some even go into their 60s.
If you think about all the women who experience POI, some in their 20s and 30s, there has to also be a population at the other end for the average to be 51.
A later menopause means you are at a much lower risk of many diseases such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and even dementia.
It is also commoner in some ethnic groups whose underrepresentation in research has contributed to skewed data, for example Ashkenazi Jews.
My mum and nana had a late menopause and I hope to follow in their footsteps.
The only worry I have is where I will get my birth control pills which I need for menstrual suppression if I get to that age and still need them 😉
