Wondering if now my progesterone is too high
« on: September 08, 2024, 09:19:26 AM »

I am on a 75 everol patch and have been using Utrogestan vaginally 100mg.
Originally Utrogestan prescribed for last 2 weeks of my cycle. The reason I went vaginally is because orally the utro did not agree with me at all.
I have been on hrt since Feb, starting with a 25 patch, then the 50 and now 75.
This month I thought I would try Utrogestan daily instead of just the 2 weeks as last month I felt horrendous after stopping because the drop or fluctuations in the hormones so I thought I would try continously instead.
I am only on day 14 of taking Utrogestan but I started earlier in my cycle this time, I started on day 10.
I feel a bit anxious as I usually do and also feeling very hot, not sleeping well etc but my main concern or change is that my breasts are soooo sore, they feel like bullets and just painful all over. I haven't had sore breasts at all for about 15/20 years so I can only attribute this to the hormones.
Not sure whether this is low estrogen or high progesterone.  Maybe the balance is off 🤷‍♀️
Does anyone know anything about this or have any advice? Also have had headaches for last few days but that could be tension related I guess.

From my experience, when the estrogen was too high, I had extremely sore breasts. After digging, I found info on that being a side effect of too much estrogen. Because the .075 patch was too high and I was still getting some symptoms at .05 patch, my dr recommended cutting the .075 to approx .06. That has worked but I will have to raise the progesterone from 100 mg to 200 mg as well.
My sleep has been affected and I’m hoping the higher progesterone will balance the .06 estrogen patch!
It’s a roller coaster!
I also use the progesterone vaginally as oral caused so much bloating, after 3-4 months, I switched to vaginal.

Usually it's from oestrogen though for a few people (like me) it's from progesterone. I've always had it when my own levels have been high before a period so I think if progesterone affected you this way you'd already know. Perhaps your own oestrogen levels are high atm? Spikes can sometimes be very high before the ovaries shut down.

100mg micronised progesterone is the lowest recommended dose with a 75mcg patch. Below this, endometrial monitoring should be considered.

If it is a fairly recent change and you feel otherwise well on that dose of estrogen, I would give it a bit longer because it may settle on its own when your body gets used to it.

If not, your options would be to consider a reduction in estrogen or switching to a different progestogen such as mirena.

Slynd (drospirenone) is another progestin worth looking at as it has mild diuretic properties which can ease breast tenderness.
