Estriol cream dosage
« on: November 14, 2024, 07:09:43 PM »

Hi

I had a smear test on Monday and the nurse agreed to ask the doctor to prescribe the low dose of vaginal estrogen cream for me.  Received notification today that they have prescribed me 1mg/g cream. Please can someone advise whether that is the lower dose or higher dose please?

Thanks

Its the high dosage. Estriol is what you want and not what used to be called Ovestin which is 1mg.
I only realised this when given Ovestin at my last request, I thought old stock!

The exact wording is Estriol 1mg/g vaginal cream - is that the right one then?

I thought Estriol cream was a lower dose, that's what I am normally prescribed but was given Ovestin which is 1mg.
Its becoming a bit confusing, has something changed recently with the dose of Estriol.
I know Minusminne knows more about the strengths of these creams, hopefully she will read your post and help us both out!

Hope so! I really don't want to start on the higher dose as I'm really sensitive to hormones, plus I was clear in asking for the lowest dose.

Hi Penguin

Estradiol cream which is your heading you cannot get here in the UK but you can in the US it is called Estrace.

Sorry to be pedantic but others may read this thread.

Estriol cream 1mg/g is 0.1% (old name Ovestin).

If you want a lower strength estriol cream to try first you need to ask for Estriol 0.01% cream.

If you goggle estriol to buy the 2 types should come up.

(Thanks for your confidence in me Ayesha ! Hope your recent flare up is subsiding)

Ps I do not know the advised dosing regime for the Estriol 0.01% cream.

I would ask if the regime advised comes out equivalent to using Estriol 1mg/g (0.1%) on its regime ie more doses at less % of one = less doses of higher % of the other.

It may be that you need to adjust any use yourself to suit you but starting with the 0.01% estriol rather than 1mg/g (0.1%).

Many ladies on here are using Estriol 0.01% just on the vulva area alongside using vagifem pessary or equivalent.

Thank you, I was hoping you'd post! Good spot te the heading, I've changed it to estriol.

Yes I wanted the lower one. I've tried the pessaries and they burned and game me cramps so I was really keen to try something 'less' if that makes sense. I will do an e-consult today. Thanks for your input!

Ps dosage regime on ky prescription said to be every day for 2 weeks, then 2-3 times pw thereafter.

One "dose" of both creams contain the same amount of active ingredients.

You just use a lot more of the weaker one per syringe than the stronger one. That's why the weaker one comes in a much bigger tube.

And if anyone has a reaction to peanuts, the weaker 0.01% contains peanut oil.

Minusminne, thanks so much for that detailed info on dosage, I find it all confusing sometimes but important to know if sensitive to the ingredients.
I'm getting there with my flare up by using more treatment, hopefully soon to be symptom free again with fingers crossed.

This regime rarely works for a lot of women and you might need more. I need two oestrogen treatments daily all approved by my GP, don't worry if you have to do the same as its all very low dose.

Thanks, defo mindful of what I've read on here and will up dose if needs. I didn't realise I could use the cream inside though,  I thought it was just for the vulva and entrance. The nurse did say I had very little vaginal discharge when she did the smear, but for me the symptoms present on the outside. That said, sex hurts and feels like I am splitting down there so perhaps I do need it inside as well.

Hi Penguin….I’ve  just started using the Estriol Cream 1mg.  There is an applicator in the box and you fill it and insert it into the vagina.  It’s every night for 2 weeks ( although the instructions say 2-4 weeks) and then twice a week, but you can use it more frequently.
