Vagifem or Ovestin
« on: December 18, 2024, 04:02:11 AM »

Hi ladies,
I have been using Ovestion nightly since September 1st with varying degrees of success.  My bladder is certainly better than it was (that was my chief complaint) but I have good days and bad days.  I had an appointment with an excellent female specialist who was happy with my progress and her internal check confirmed that things were no longer dry 'down there'.  She gave me a script for Vagifem pessaries if I felt like a change or if I felt that Ovestin was not working as well at any point.
Can I ask for opinions please?  I have not used Vagifem internally before.  I would like to hear from anyone who has used (or uses both) internally.  Good or bad.
Many thanks.

Since August this year I have used Vagifem, Vagirux and Estriol cream, at times together and separately. My GP did not want to prescribe both or want me to use both together, as many women do. My symptoms were UTIs, soreness and burning. I had a few urine tests and a swab test, which both came back ‘normal’. After 3 months I went to see a private gynaecologist as I was still sore. She said to use Estriol internally and externally every other day as it was a ‘better’ form of hormone. I don’t know what she meant but I am certainly much better using the cream. Maybe it works better on sore skin and it easy to apply everywhere, including around the urethra. It is a bit messy though and I miss the convenience of Vagifem. (I was concerned about the amount of plastic waste with Vagifem and have also used Vagirux, which has a single applicator to wash and reuse. To me they work and feel just the same.) I am also using Cetraben ointment as a barrier cream. My GP is happy for me to use Estriol every other day since the gynaecologist says it is ok. I hope you feel better soon.

Morning.  If necessary we can use VA treatment every night.

Some find that 'vagifem' internally with 'ovestin/estriol' on the outer areas eases symptoms.  VA mimics repeated urine infection-type symptoms really really well.  There are other creams to try: Sylc and Yes products have good reports.  It really is Trial and Error.

When symptoms niggle I take 2 Nurofen 3 times a day and put an extra dose of 'estriol' up mid-afternoon.

Let us know how you get on?

If using vagifem,I'd hold out for that and NOT vagirux, although you'll be told they're exactly the same, myself and a lot of other women on here couldn't use the cheaper vagirux as it made things worse, now,it may not for you,you may be perfectly fine on it but you asked for experiences and it upset my stomach, pain etc yet the vagifem was fine 🤷‍♀️

I use both treatments every day, I have experimented with dosage in the past and there is no doubt that I need daily treatment, this with the approval of my GP.
We are all different and you have to find what works for you, for me the pessary doesn't fully treat the outside area and needs help from the cream, I use a smear of Estriol/Ovestin twice a day morning and night. This regime keeps me symptom free.

I'm using Vagifem everyday again, can't tolerate Vagirux. Did try to reduce to 6 a week for a few weeks and was ok the day after missing the pessary but the day after that was sore and had to use extra so was a waste of time missing one. Still using Estriol externally at night but unable to use during the day and internally, it just irritates with movement and walking for some reason. At night I apply Bepanthen on top of the Estriol and that calms the irritation.
My Vagifem prescription is for 5 per week but the doctor did say use everyday if needed then reduce when ok but I don't seem to be able to manage a reduction anymore. I do get 2 boxes every 7 weeks so get enough pessaries to last anyway.
Like Ayesha I need both treatments as Vagifem doesn't reach the outside bits at all and Estriol irritates me inside but is great for external. I would definately recommend using both it made my life normal again, well most the time  :)
