I’ve been on Femeston conti tablets for around 10 years and they’re suiting me really well I had a terrible time at the start of meno depression,anxiety,insomnia to name a few. I tried various tablets and found Femeston to be the best for me. I went for my review last year and the nurse told me as I had been on HRT for 10 years it was time to think about coming off it. I don’t want to as the thought of those horrific symptoms coming back scares me, she said I could go on the gel and utrogeston and slowly wean off. I really don’t want to start messing about with other types of HRT as the Femeston has been really good for me.
I will come off HRT eventually but not until I retire in 5 years time as I don’t want to have to be dealing with side effects and having to go to work.
I’m due my HRT review soon and am looking for advice on how to strengthen my case for staying on it. Can the nurse refuse to give it to me? I’m of the opinion if it’s not broke don’t fix it and I’ve had absolutely no problems on Femeston.

You do not have to come off HRT! Where do these “ medics” get this inaccurate information from?
 Menopause is for life, not 10 years. Symptoms can be debilitating, yet women are expected to carry on working and be functioning members of society.

Why do you need gel and utrogestan, to then wean off?

If it ain’t broke, leave well alone. Has NICE got any info on HRT and time frames? Bomb or Joziel
will know (?).

You will need to stand your ground and assert your “ case” .

Thanks Nas it’s the practice nurse that seems to think 10 years is long enough maybe I should ask to speak to the doctor as I have read lots of articles saying you can take it for as long as you want if you have no problems with it. I just couldn’t cope with any return of the awful symptoms just now.

Ring the surgery tomorrow and ask for a referral to a dedicated menopause clinic.  As long as any potential problems have been explained to u, depending on your age, then there is no necessity to ever stop.  There are waiting lists for Clinics both in the NHS and private sector, when the appt arrives U can cancel if it's no longer required. 

Many Medics still do not understand how replacement can enhance lifestyle etc..  I don't think that a Nurse can stop a prescription which presumably was issued by a GP?

I couldn't find anything on a very quick look at the NICE guidelines but the BMS state there are 'no arbitrary limits' when you should stop HRT, provided the benefits outway any risks

Hopefully the doctor is better informed, otherwise, as CLKD says, ask to be referred to a specialist

Agree, your nurse is not up to date. If you are doing well on it and the benefits outweigh any risks then its ok to carry on, you just need to put your case over and find the latest guidelines, but you shouldn't have a problem.

Mars62, your nurse is an idiot who should be ignored.

As others have said, there is no time limit and it would be absolute madness to switch to a different HRT regime and risk all the upheaval and side effects.

Tell the nurse that it she refuses to prescribe the Femoston, you will report her to a senior manager and/or source it privately. 

I wouldn't even think about giving up HRT when you retire either.  There is no reason to do so and why would you want to suffer symptoms when you are finally free of work and presumably want to enjoy retirement?  I can't think of any benefits I'm afraid.

Would the nurse want to stop using a product which keeps her feeling well and balanced? I doubt it very much!

That is just plain wrong, I hope you manage to get it sorted and stay on it. Every time I need a repeat script for my HRT I have to have a review because my surgery always want me off HRT and I'm under 3 years on it.
Just as an aside, it's very disappointing that the guidance notes in the link are still talking about twice weekly maintenance dose of vaginal oestrogen.  For many, as you all know on here, daily is essential.  I thought the guidelines had been updated to reflect this?

Thanks to everyone for the replies my review should be in the next few weeks so I’m ready to state my case  if she’s adamant about me changing I will ask to see the doctor and explain my reasons to him, he’s very good and pretty sure he’d listen to me
