Bone Health

Hi all, not sure the right forum, section to post here, if I get any views or reply.
I have been taking yoghurt, sometimes kefir and calcium food like tofu. Just want to know if dried fruits like prunes are good for bone density, osteoporosis? I have read somewhere the intake is a lot and worried about the sugar content.

A good varied diet is good for our overall health.  Have U been offered a bone density scan to judge how well your skeleton is?  What R your periods doing for example?

Good, brisk walking helps enormously for bone health.  Chewing food properly will encourage the jaw to build proper bone strength. 

Which did you read, i.e. what is your 'somewhere'?

Don't know the science of it all as far as foods go, milk being an obvious good source for bone health. Too much sugar is not good as we all know but vitamin supplements are helpful like VitD, Zinc, there has been some bad press regarding calcium which you might want to research. I was pleased to hear that cashew nuts are rich in magnesium, I eat a lot of those.

I do know of people who became dairy intolerant and have a dairy free diet but in later life developed osteoporosis, therefore its important to supplement your diet with the right foods and supplements.

Sauerkraut, Kimchi, soured cucumbers...  Calcium + D3.

1in 2 women get Osteoporosis after Menopause, so it's rather obvious it's hormones that mainly do the job!

Hello again, thanks all for good health advice and suggestions.  I was goggling and searching for food sources help for joints, bones... thinking.. what about more fruits or vegetables. The Royal Osteoporosis Society mentioned Prunes and also I start typing prunes and gave me a lot of listing, websites!
I have read about scan, but afraid going into a hospital for one, will it be quick and wondering what will happen next?  I am still Perimenopause, so need to prevent and be ready for the next stage.   
CLKD- I chew my food too quickly, my husband always tell me off. I gobble at dinner time, more hungry around that time.
Some Calcium supplements can weaken bones if you take too much, but how much do we need? Confusing..  I have tried to eat more dairy now. Cashew nuts, I love nuts.
Wow, didn't know fermented food help bones too, thanks. I'm learning something new every day.

I eat quickly too.  [long story short]

I was un-aware that fermented foods help bone structure. 

Scans don't take long.  Pelvis and hips are the denist bones, a scan would give you a base line from which to work.

Prunes are an excellent source of boron, which has been shown to stimulate bone growth and metabolism.  It also helps to preserve BMD and strength.  Like you, I don't want all the sugar.

Here's a list of other foods high in boron.  I would rather eat avocados and peanut butter, but not together.

A healthy lifestyle is super important for many, many reasons but is often not enough to keep someone from getting osteoporosis.

Like my parents, it is often the health conscious people who get it as they tend to be slimmer and live longer.

One in two postmenopausal women will get osteoporosis, so I would urge anyone concerned to get a DEXA and consider hormone therapy where appropriate as this really is the single most effective thing we can do for bone health assuming all the basics have been addressed eg vitamin D, smoking, alcohol, exercise and addressing person specific risk factors.

Some specialists are totally against calcium tablets,I was prescribed them for osteopenia until an orthopaedic surgeon told me he was against them as the calcium can build up anywhere and not always in the bones,I now take Vit D + K2

So it could be that NHS is poisoning me because I was prescribed it and take it every day after DXA scan (-1.8 Osteopenia).

Canned fish, sesame and chia seeds provide calcium in an "easy to access" form. You need good Vitamin D levels in order to effectively absorb calcium.

Can anyone remember back in the day when given HRT they also gave you a calcium supplement to take (or is my memory deceiving me) and it wasn't long before the calcium was causing bloating and I soon gave it up. Fast forward to being much older and recently told to take a calcium supplement which I did but before long it was causing awful reflux and again gave it up.  I'm glad I did as it seems to be the bad boy vitamin from recent research.

Definitely Ayesha,the calcium can build in the arteries and also cause kidney issues, I don't go near them x

My friends lack some knowledge on nutrients, what good for women at menopause age, even though some are around 50-80. Maybe they have less symptoms and don't know what to recommend me to eat. 
Had other scans in the past, maybe I should ask doc about the Dexa scan.
Good to know that seeds provide calcium too. 
I was at my doc surgery today, can't believe so many people waiting to see a GP. As I was waiting I was counting...    about 14 patients. Also a sign said 'hospital is busy around this winter,  emergency only'..  Next app with GP is next month or early December!
A few months ago, I was taking Omega 3 and Evening Primrose oil, just wondering if I should take them again. Sometimes get some tingling, aches on my left side. It comes on and off.  I am taking Vit D only. x

Is there a dietician at your Practice Felicity1?

I can see a Nurse Practitioner sooner than our GP unless it's urgent when any GP would be substituted for ours.
