Bleeding twice a month for over 8 months
« on: August 19, 2024, 08:27:42 PM »

Just seen private consultant who got me having a pelvic scan to check lining - all good.  Now waiting to have bloods checked but in the meantime trying a change in hormone strengths.  I’m on Sandrena 2mg and 100mg Utrogestan daily.  Now I’m trying out 200mg Utrogestan daily.  If that doesn’t work then may lower Sandrena.  Has anyone been advised the same?  Or has anyone got any thoughts on trying this out?

Are you peri or meno? If you're peri you might be better with a sequi regime and have a scheduled bleed.

There are also multiple bleed free options - nobody has to put up with bleeding if they don't want to.

If you are on a therapeutic dose of estrogen there's no reason to lower it.

Bleeding problems are best controlled by adjusting the dose, type, schedule or delivery method of the progestogen.

Is your private consultant a menopause specialist?

Morning! I also bled like this for 8 months- it is so draining isn’t it. Doubling the progesterone dose did not work for me. I got a mirena fitted and eventually stopped bleeding, just the odd spot here and there. This was via my GP, I am really lucky to have a surgery with a few menopause specialists x

Yes he is a gynaecologist menopause specialist and I’m told I’m post menopausal now as I’m 55 and had been on sequential for 3 years before I changed to continuous 100mg in February.

I have never liked the thought of having a Mirena coil and my gp had just given me the option of put up with bleeding or have the Mirena coil.

That’s why in desperation I decided 2 weeks ago to look at private and found there was one appointment free in the hospital just down the road!  I couldn’t believe it.  Checked out the specialist online and booked it with his team immediately!  He’s given me hope, with the various options of altering both hormones, got me into a scan 1 week later and, as I said, awaiting bloods to be taken for various related problems including sooo tired in afternoons.

I feel with slight relief that someone has listened (but it’s cost money)  :( :(

Glad you have a plan, it is a shame that we often have to fund our own care regarding menstrual and menopause issues but our health is too important to be principled at the expense of getting appropriate and timely treatment.

If you were only on 100mg of utrogestan and have increased this to 200mg continuous there's every chance that this will control the bleeding in time.

I would give this at least 3 months before writing it off as it can sometimes take a little while to do it's job.

Just be aware that some aren't meno till their early 60s so although you may be meno at 55 there's no guarantee you are. There seems to be a textbook somewhere in the NHS that says everyone is meno by 54. Hope the scan goes well, it might show a reason for the bleeding.

I know Sheila99, I don’t really know if I’ve reached meno but both my GP and the memo specialist said by 54 yrs old I would be meno!  All clear on my pelvic scan so still awaiting to have bloods.
Too early to know if increase in Utrogestan working

Thanks all for your help.  It can be a bit lonely struggling through the undergrowth and no one knowing what you’re going through  :)

Update Blood tests: All ok except for Vit D low, Folate low and Testosterone hardly anything! Therefore now taking Vit D and Folate supplements and about to start on Testosterone tomorrow.  I am hopeful although at the moment the bleeding is continuing  :(

Also just confirmed by other blood tests that I’ve got arthritis in hands and feet as well as shoulder.   Urgh!

How can blood tests determine arthritis unless it's rheumatoid?  I would ask for an X-ray to determine the amount of normal wear and tear in the joints so that I could manage any aches and pains with over the counter medication.

Glad that those tests have shown what you are low in and there are remedies for that.

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Also the body may become dry: inside and out; scalp, skin, vagina, deep in the ears, eyes etc..  ::)

Without stopping your HRT you probably can't know if you are through into menopause.  Replacement may give a false impression of where your body actually might be.

Peri - those years where we notice changes in mood, periods, skin condition etc. continue until the last monthly period = menopause.  We are told to count for at least 12-14 months without a bleed of any type B4 we can believe that we are 'there'  ::).  So for any medic to suggest that you are into menopause whilst U R using replacement therapy is a bit far off the mark.

Some ladies go into peri from early 30s, others don't reach menopause until mid-late 50s though this is not usual.  Medics get stuck on numbers   >:( !

MayB keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart progress?  Sunshine is also good for topping up VitD levels - as is brisk exercise [note to self  ;D - does gardening count?]

Let us know how you get on?  Who is prescribing the testosterone and in which form?

Sorry CLKD, my arthritis was diagnosed after having X-rays (note to self don’t put a post on in the evening as brain definitely not all there)!  Those were organised by my GP.  The blood tests and scan through the private gynaecologist/meno specialist route.

I was surprised about the low Vitamin D result as I am out most days now that I’m better.

I’m taking Testron gel 1 pump (0.5mg) on alternate days on my shins.

I do feel all ‘gelled up’ what with the estradiol gel on my thighs too.

I’m hoping my migraines won’t get worse and yes I do keep a diary for all of this.  Keep you updated.  Have the best day you all can x

:( Not good about the arthritis. Same thing happened for me with vit d, I spend a lot of time outside too but it seems I'm just not making it like I should. Good news about the scan though, let's hope yhe increased utro works.
