Return of Perimenopause Symptoms Since Covid Infection
« on: September 27, 2024, 07:29:48 PM »

Hi, have you had a return of your perimenopause symptoms since a covid infection?

This seems to have happened to me and other women have been reporting this too.  Even though I've upped my HRT dose, this has made no difference to my return of symptoms.  I'm going to ask my GP for an oestradiol blood test to see if I'm absorbing my gel, as I've heard some women can stop absorbing gel after a while.

I had covid this summer and my peri symptoms started returning.
The past two months they've increased more and I'm really struggling with a whole host of symptoms, especially depression and anxiety and I'm worried about this.  It feels like I'm not taking any HRT anymore.

My present dosing: 3 x pumps of Oestrogel, Utrogestan cyclical vaginal.

My menopause clinic don't want to change my dosing, as I went up by 1/2 pump 3 weeks ago and only just trialed a month of continuous Utrogestan - this gave an unusual long heavy bleed.  So under medical guidance returned to cyclical and this recent bleeding has now stopped thankfully.

Have you experienced a return of your symptoms since covid?
If yes, has this been resolved?
If yes, what helped?

Hi!  it's been reported that women got periods after years without as part of Covid-19 infection.  Continuing research might eventually explain why.

What were your periods up to prior to you starting HRT?  It may be that the Virus activated your own hormones which mayB over-riding the HRT.

How do U feel overall?

Hi CLKD

Prior to HRT my periods were regular give or take 5 days either side.  I started HRT in December 2023. I was experiencing similar symptoms to how I am now: anxiety, depression, brain fog, heart palpitations, prickly hot/burny skin, dizziness, headaches, fatigue.  The HRT really helped with these.  Now they've returned.

However, last month the symptoms lifted from day 18 to 28.  Which would be where my own oestrogen would've risen.  Then came back during my period, when my own hormones would've gone right down. So I'm wondering if my own hormones are influencing how I'm feeling presently.  I'm even wondering if my Oestrogel dose is too high?  I was comfortable on 2 pumps pre covid.  Now I'm on 3 pumps.

There is a line of thinking that Covid really can impact the ovaries. It can disrupt hormone production for some time after and if someone was teetering on menopause anyway, can push that along faster.

So yes, this is a known thing and you might need an increase in HRT.

Half a pump of gel is nothing really and not much of an increase. You should be easily able to increase to 4 pumps of gel via your GP without any protest from them. This is the max licensed dose so if you needed to go above that, you might need to try a private menopause clinic or you could instead ask to switch to a 100mcg patch and see if you absorb that better. (Equivalent max licensed dose in patches.) You might also need an increase in progesterone when increasing estrogen.
