Holding breath a lot
« on: September 15, 2024, 07:56:35 PM »

Hi ladies
This will sound really silly. I've got into a bad habit of holding my breath most days. I just don't fully breath out. This obviously increases my anxiety and heart rate. I just don't know how to get back into a normal pattern without thinking about it. It's very annoying.

SING GIRL SING ......... my music teacher told me in 1968 that not many people use our lung capacity to it's full -- in/out as we are designed.

Not breathing correctly can cause anxiety to surge.  Brisk walking or swimming may help as it means that we can monitor how often we need to stop to draw breath - realise that nowt awful happens so continue a little further every time.

Typing this is making me draw breath  ::)

I bet it's more common than you think and people don't even realise they are sometimes holding their breath! I sometimes find myself doing the same. I try and check in with my breathing during the day and do box breathing which seems to do a reset.

Can U whistle?  I have lost the knack  ::).  this too will pass !

When you drink do you breath naturally?   More likely to be focussed anxiety.

I do this without realising too, it is a hard habit ro break. It defo increases my anxiety. In fact, I'm sat at the dentist having just seen the hygienist and waiting to go in and have an old filling replaced, and I'm doing it now. That is even after 2.5mg of diazepem! Wish I had advice that work, but other than to say try and catch yourself doing it and perhaps learn some yoga breathing techniques (in through nose, out through mouth and out breath longer than in breath) I don't know what else to suggest as I've been doing it for about 15 years now!!

Yes cardio exercise will certainly force you to breathe. And certainly Pilates and Yoga because the teacher will keep saying breathe in out etc. Putting your hand on your stomach and inflating in and out with the breath is very calming too.
