Burning tongue and oestrogen
« on: September 04, 2024, 05:02:43 PM »

Please, please, please can someone tell me whether they had burning tongue that resolved by increasing their oestrogen dose?
I am at the end of my tether here. Have just about managed to get myself back on track after a dreadful couple of months that finally made me start taking mirtazapine.  I badly needed to sleep properly, having only managed a couple of hours per night for several weeks. My anxiety was very high - that, coupled with panic attacks, triggered IBS symptoms and I stopped being able to eat properly.
Vitamin levels, blood tests all ok. Dr has treated me for oral thrush (Nystan). Wake up and it's not so bad - but by mid afternoon, then into evening, it is horrible.
I am now sleeping healthily and eating properly - and have returned to work (teacher). Not the best job to have when your mouth is painful! Sweet things help; relief using chlorohexidine mouthwash is temporary.
Currently on 75 Evorel patches and 200mg utrogestan for 25/28 days. All advice is welcome. Thanks for reading.

Which toothpaste are U using, because I found that anything with SLSs in caused mouth burning: chocolate, bananas, butter on toast would set off intense pain ........

I haven't taken HRT.

Did U have oral thrush, it's chaceteristic on the tongue.

Thank you CLKD - I did read all about your reaction to bananas etc., also the toothpaste with SLS in it. I am going to give it a try - happy to try anything at this point.
Inconclusive about whether I actually did/do have oral thrush. The slight improvement may have been due to whatever my own hormones were doing at that time...or not.
Definitely worth giving the toothpaste a go.
Thanks again. It sounds so silly that a hurty mouth can cause such a reaction - but it's really getting me down!

weasley, I'm afraid burning mouth syndrome a very common menopause problem.  It can be localised to one spot, it can move around or it can be the entire mouth.  I've had spells of it myself in the past and I think it was mostly linked to progesterone.

I found that Corsodyl mouthwash used immediately before bed worked very well.

Mary G - thank you for this. When you say progesterone- do you mean too much or too little?
I have corsodyl and it does relieve the symptoms for a while. But they always come back 😞
I'm keeping track of this and other symptoms;  really trying hard to make myself feel more human and spot patterns (if there are any)!
Thank you again.

weasle, sorry I got your name wrong!

Too much progesterone caused it in my case.  I was using progesterone lozenges at the time which we're brilliant but they caused this one side effect.  Also too much Utrogestan set it off.

Mary G, please don't apologise - I am just thankful for all information! It is a silly name anyway, since my husband is a farmer he just calls me Weasle McDiesel. But that is even more silly.
That is very interesting- also had no idea that Progesterone came in lozenge form! I'm having a hard time working out whether my oestrogen needs to be increase or reduced - thankfully, I think 🤞that my progesterone is about right.

CLKD - please to report that non-SLS toothpaste is amazing. Got some and it was noticeably more comfortable to brush teeth. Mouth often felt a little better after brushing, but my original toothpaste did tend to make it sting a lot.
SLS-free toothpaste has not done that.
Will take the wins, no matter how small. Thank you!

U R welcome.  The suspicion that it was toothpaste which caused my problems was raised on MM Forum.  If I change by mistake, i.e. when we used the pre-packed toilet bag in the camper , I soon noticed the difference!

Depending on what you had tested, a burning mouth can also be a sign of B12 deficiency.

AKatieD, my B12 was on the healthy side of normal (not just "within range"). But thank you. I've learned such a lot about vitamins, minerals, hormones and so on during the last 8 weeks. Have a new respect for Biology (takes a lot for Physics teacher to admit this 😁).

I didn't know anything about physics or chemistry but have learned a lot about biology from an early age  ;D

CLKD, I like numbers too much so I ditched biology post 16.
With your biological knowledge - have you heard or read about oestrogen "kicking back". Confess it has me bamboozled, but there are whole groups of women who seem to swear by massive doses of progesterone and virtually no oestrogen. I haven't the knowledge or inclination to argue for or against this idea. I understand that the ratio is important but find the idea of this kickback a difficult one to understand 🤔

Hormones are normal for us all.  When they begin to drop off and if too much hormone is replaced, some may consider the effects as a 'kick back'.  It mayB that they don't require any HRT but have become embroiled in try to find a balance.  I rarely consider how others are because each body and brain are different so will react individually.

It can be Trial and Error finding a regime which helps, very often they aren't a cure.
