Stopped HRT- should I take calcium and vitamin D
« on: August 15, 2024, 07:49:51 PM »

After a lot of trouble with daily migraines I was advised to stop HRT and been off it for 2 months now and things going ok.  I have read that it’s good to take vitamin D and Calcium supplements.  Anyone had any experience with this and is it worth doing.

Hi Khm, After stopping HRT at Christmas I started taking a calcium/vitamin D and magnesium supplement.

Don't know if it actually does anything but I guess it must be useful as I feel I now need bone protection to replace hrt. The magnesium is supposedly good for sleep and vitamin d is important for all ladies who are postmenopausal apparently.

It doesn't do any harm so I'll keep taking it.

I think it's like all supplements, they're only useful if you're deficient. They say most people in the UK are deficient in vit D in winter.

Research Calcium before you start to take it, new report recently that its not good to take long term but I can't remember the details.
I can't take it because it gives me stomach issues but I take Zinc and VitD every day alongside probiotics, the zinc reversed my years of being pre-diabetic.

I know there are people that say you don't need supplements if you have a good diet, that I am afraid doesn't help an ageing body that no longer absorbs some vitamins through food. I take a few supplements now and I would never stop because I know how good they are helping me and in particular because of not  taking systemic HRT.

MayB get blood tests done B4 taking supplements.  Certainly many are low on VitD which is advised as the 1 to take through UK winters even if out in the sunshine on a regular basis.  Also those who cover up may require extra VitD capsules.  My systems were doing 20 mins weeding then having to sit absolutely still for 2 hours  :-\, I was unable to move, even sneezing was difficult.  Once I began prescribed capsules I felt improvement quite quickly but the NHS will prescribe one high dose then 1 has to buy over the counter which are no-where near as high.

Khm - how do U feel overall?  Magnesium in high doses may cause 'the runs', when I used it to relax the muscles for a cough that wouldn't shift, it worked for the cough ;-).

I actually feel pretty good overall; a few hot flushes but nowhere near what I had when I first started HRT.  Might speak to doctor about supplements but Vit D might be the one in the winter.  Thank you all for responding
