best moisturiser for VA
« on: August 14, 2024, 03:36:22 PM »

Hi, I havn't been here for a long time but I need to ask the advice of all lovely Ladies on here! Here goes  :-[

Sex has been a rarity for sometime now (sadly, years) but at last I feel desirable again! I have suffered from VA for years (Gyn. diagnosed) and tried Vagifem, Ovestin (?) cream and just about
everything available OTC. Had a look today and there are now lots of creams, oils, pessaries on the market I havn't heard of. They are quite pricey and I wonder if anyone reading this could
recommend something please. I'm 65 and post-meno about 4 years.

A moisturiser won't replace the need for topical oestrogen, I assume you are using treatment for VA.
I use Yes moisturiser and have no experience of any others on the market.

Thanks Ayesha. My GP recommended Yes a few years ago (it's actually sold out on the site I was looking at!)
I have spent a long time today reading online and came across Naydaya oil,
Miracle Balm, the Dr Wolff range. Most of these products are for daily use, then every 2 or 3 days. I plan to ask the Chemist's advice before trying anything. To see a Dr here is impossible!

I get from your post that you are not using appropriate vaginal atrophy treatment if U R searching for alternatives, you don't make it clear in your thread.

None of the products 1 can buy over the counter will replace oestrogen.  What many find useful is to get a specific treatment for VA: "vagifem" or 'ovestin/estriol' to use every night initially for 3 weeks.  Then experiment with how many nights leaves the vagina/vulva comfortable without a return of symptoms.

Some use moisturisers as well, i.e. 'yes' or 'sylc' products.  Where do U live if you R unable to see a Dr., there is the option of speaking to a Nurse Practitioner and a Pharmacist may be able to advise.

Let us know whether U R currently using VA treatments and how you get on.

Sorry not being clearer! I have tried both prescribed items you mentioned CLKD, and after months I was still suffering. I told my Dr (a young lady GP) and she said to use more lubrication  :'(  I was tongue in cheek about “impossible to see Dr” but there is a wait of 3 weeks here (near Perth)

How often did U use VA treatment. It's often not a quick fix especially if symptoms have been there for ages.  Sometimes when my symptoms niggle I use an extra dose mid-afternoon as well as night time.  The Trial and Error can be tiring and it may take a few weeks but both those products should work; either together or singly.  Sometimes vagifem is used internally with a smear of estriol around the labia, or estriol used inside and out.

It took about 3 weeks 4 me to find a routine, other ladies take longer as some feel that the initial applications can sting.  That's usually due to the vaginal walls being very thin and reactive - little steps, a little way inside until the vagina feels softer.  Then insert a little further.

As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry ....... in places that we were not expecting  >:(  ::) .........

I find that good old KY Jelly suits if nowt else is to hand.  'vagisel' over the counter can help until oestrogen replacement kicks in.  R U concerned about using oestrogen long term?

Yes is available on Amazon and any GSM (VA) medication can be obtained from your practise nurse, you won't need to see a GP.

I would seriously think again about using topical HRT because its a condition that will only get worse as you age. Some women don't get on at first using the products but with perseverance and the help of a moisturiser the body will get used to the treatment. There is no need to suffer, you don't have to!

My regime for example is every day treatment of Vagifem, Estriol cream smeared on the outside and Yes moisturiser, this is the only way I can lead a normal life and keep GSM symptoms under control.

Just to add that depending on how long VA has been untreated for, it can take a long time to improve and often you need to use pessaries each night combined with estriol externally.  That's the regime I use and even then sometimes I'm surprised I have more discomfort some weeks than others. But as other said above, you will need to use the treatment for life.
I find a smear of coconut oil is a good long lasting moisturiser.
