Yes the specimen should be first thing mid stream. Not that the GP mentioned it but that is what I always done.

Bit aggravated that the receptionist said nothing was written up in my notes re. urine test and the GP isn't going to be in until Friday. Tried to keep calm and polite to find out if the nurse could deal with it or do I have to come back with a fresh one on Friday. Which of course means I wouldn't get a prescription until Mid August !! Keep fingers crossed that some thing will be sorted out. Must admit the receptionist was very helpful

Getting increasingly confused, but maybe that is my fault. Took a  urine specimen into my NHS GP last Monday 5th . By Friday morning they did not have the results back so as I did not want another few nights of little sleep I managed to get a private appointment locally. The GP sent the specimen to a lab but put me straight onto Macrobid which I have now taken for 3 days( still got 5 to go) and it appears to be helping. However just got a text this morning from my NHS practice that have sent a prescription for Fosfomycin to my local chemist. Naturally I will continue with the Macrobid but just wondered why the other GP prescribed something different.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Because different practitioners have access to different products as well as products in the private sector mayB pricer than the NHS is prepared to have in the pharmacy.

Whilst ABs will ease symptoms of vaginal atrophy/urine infection feelings they cannot replace oestrogen lost.  They are after all an anti-inflammatory.  Why has your GP surgery not rung you to explain whether is/not infection present in the sample?  3 days often isn't enough of an AB even 1 that is prescribed for a specific bug.

Continue with the Macrobid .  Your surgery may not be pleased if you went privately without being referred ..........  :-\.

Let us know how you get on.  And continue with the VA treatment every night for at least 3 weeks along with pain relief if necessary.

Thanks CLKD I do appreciate your advice. The surgery did send a text saying the lab result was  an "uncomplicated urine infection" but I didn't receive that until this morning. I still have 3 1/2 days of Macrobid left so hopefully the HRT will kick in and I won't get another UTI for a long time. I was just worried that maybe I was on the wrong AB.

I don't think I will mention the private consultation, it was only a one off as I was so tired with getting up a night.  Lack of sleep is a killer and it is 33 C here today which doesn't help either   !!!
