Hungry all the time and weight gain
« on: August 13, 2024, 09:33:45 PM »

I’ve been in Peri for about 3 years now. Still not used to all the ups and downs that it brings. Along with all the irregularities and anxiety, I now feel absolutely starving hungry all of the time, no matter what I eat.

Sometimes I manage to control it, but a lot of the time I give in to it and I’ve gained over a stone in the last few months. I’ve been doing really well up to this point. Maintaining a healthy weight and walking regularly to help to keep the weight down and eating healthy most of the time.

I’ve not had a period since the beginning of June and rhis seems to have brought with it an increase in hunger and cravings for everything and anything.

Can anyone offer any advice or has experienced this ?

It’s beginning to get me down. I get so angry with myself that I can’t stop.

I’d love to be able to lose the stone that I have gained. I do really well all day and then can’t seem to stop snacking at night

In the 1990s I was advised by the National Association for Pre-menstrual Syndrome [NAPS] to eat every 3 hours, 24/7.  Not to add anything else to my diet but to spread it through little and often.  The idea being to choose slow release foods like oats, bananas, meat and two veg rather than rice because that don'ts have lasting goodness.

Grazing certainly works for me.  We have also added more fruits and veg to our diet over the years and ditched most ultra processed ......... DH snacks on dried fruits .

Are you on any treatment?

Loss of estrogen is known to increase appetite - this has been studied in rats as well as humans!

I agree with the comment about making sure you are actually eating enough good stuff - often if we try to follow restrictive diets two things happen - reduced metabolism as the body thinks there's famine and doubles down on storing fat, and also appetite increases with particular desire for calories dense food.

Finally, are there any other factors that could be driving this, for example certain medication such as antidepressants especially mirtazapine or steroids can affect appetite and weight gain.

You may already have had your thyroid checked, however hypothyroidism typically leads to weight gain with the same or even reduced appetite, but still worth excluding.

Low oestrogen is known to lead to insulin resistance, which, if unchecked, can led to diabetes. This is one of the big diseases, along with osteoporosis and heart disease, that HRT can prevent. If you are not on HRT, you want to be eating low glycemic foods, with little or no sugar, to try and keep your glucose as stable as possible. Maybe have some bloods done to find out what your blood sugar is like.

We eat healthy foods but taking statins threw my blood sugars out of kilter 12 months ago, every1 seemed freaked !!!

Added sugar substitutes as well as sugars in cakes etc. should be a treat, however sugars from fruits/veg are used differently in the human digestive system ;-)

In case it helps you, Merrygoround, Melissa tincture worked really well for me for nausea. Just a few drops in a little water got rid of mine for hours. Might be worth a try?
