Histamine Intolerant/Palpitations/after eating
« on: May 31, 2024, 03:55:13 PM »

Hi

I've been on a mission to figure out what is causing my heart palpitaitons/ectopic beats and I'm pretty sure it's a histamine reaction.  I'm usually fine until I eat (I fast until lunchtime).  Today I ate avocado for lunch and have had frequent heart palps since (i haven't had avocado for ages but seem to remember this happened last time I ate it). I've just read that avocado is high histamine  ::)
I'm on 100 evorel patches and 200mg utro for 2 weeks.

I'm looking into the low histamine diet.  Has anyone had palps from histamine and what helps?

Thanks so much x

Hi!  also advocate !!! avocados !!! take a HUGE amount of water to produce plus the transport across the World ;-).  Why fast?  We do that naturally whilst we sleep so it mayB that you are starving your body ........ think about the times when you eat your meals .  It maybe that the sudden intake of food when the gut is empty is enough to begin palpitations.  Something to do with the ??? vagus ??? nerve  :-\

I've never understood histamine intolerance  :-\.

Hi Joann,

From my point of view it’s nothing to do with intolerance to something. Sex hormonal imbalance may create different symptoms, some of them may look very similar to allergies or intolerance to certain foods. I remember in peri I had itchy skin on my face for decades and eating sugar made it worse. Later I developed very strange reactions (skin and heart) on nuts and carrot cake. Any medical professionals never suggested that they were purely peri meno symptoms despite me being a very healthy person with no allergies or food intolerance history in my whole life. Eventually when my hormonal imbalance was treated, all those “intolerance symptoms” were gone overnight and I started eating all my usual food with no problems again.

Meno symptoms are very good in mimicking different conditions like heart, lungs, bladder, skin diseases, allergies and intolerances and many more.

Thank you both for replying  :)

CLKD - I think you might be on to something with the sudden intake of food.  I've also got a Hiatus Hernia so could be that also contributing x

AngelaH - I would like to think you're right about that as I have never had any issues before peri with eating anything (aside from the reflux) but never causing ectopic beats x

I used to get this all the time, exactly as you describe.  I've even put on weight because afraid to have that 'hungry' feeling as then when I would eat it would spark off loads of heart ectopics.

The doctors put me on beta blockers which, unbeknown to me, make you more hungry, so I would eat more to avoid that hungry feeling which I knew would spark ectopics when I finally did eat.

Yes histamine type foods added to the problem but it was there anyway.

When I was put on evorel sequi by my own request, not because of the heart things, suddenly it all calmed down.  I'm now lowering the beta blockers.

I think fasting is supposed to be healthy but I couldn't do it once, I can do it now until lunch time.

The vagus nerve is one thing to consider, as it is linked to both the stomach and the heart.  I think Dr Gupta refers to the gastro cardiac syndrome.  Not sure what to do about that.

But for me hormone therapy definitely has helped with this one, so just letting you know in case it is partly what is going on for you.  I see you're on HRT, but I thought it still worth mentioning.  Hope it all calms down soon  :)

Propranolol never altered my food intake - they did in fact take away the constant, 24/7 nausea which enabled me to eat 'properly'.

Fortunately I've never been aware of my heart etc. .

CLKD I was put on propranolol in the past, long distant past now, and no they didn't increase hunger.

The ones I'm on more recently, bisoprolol, seem to.  They are less likely to trigger asthma though hence they were prescribed.

Thanks for your reply KaraShannon - did you find that Bisoprolol helped more with the ectopics than propranolol?  What dose are you on?  x

JoannFran, I was given propranolol years ago when I wasn't really aware of ectopics, I was given it for anxiety with public speaking at work which was temporary.  I think I only took them for a week.

The bisoprolol is a very strong drug.  I was given it because I would get these weird episodes of heart racing, which resolved on hrt.  They resolved first on bisoprolol, but the ectopics, no idea really, I don't think they did a lot with them.  One cardiologist said they could make them more frequent because they tend to happen when the heart slows down, and bisoprolol slows the heart down.  But in some people they help.

I think it's an amazing drug as it did change my anxious state at the time (physically more than mentally, such as things like racing heart, hyperventilating, etc), but I personally, if I could turn the clock back, would have only wanted to be on it a short time and then wean off.  Because gradually over time I think it caused fatigue, muscle weakness, weight gain, etc.  There's a lot of reports out there of this and it's a strong thing so it's not possible to fight against while on it.  The doctors don't think it does this and it's less documented in their literature, more patient reports.  I know its done this and I'm now working to get my fitness and energy back.

I don't want to put you off, in the short term it could give the body the 'rest' it needs.  It's a great drug for that.  I just wish I'd been given it with the long term warning, as the effects were gradual over time.

Thanks so much KaraShannon.  I tried Bisoprolol some years ago but was only on the lowest dose 1.25mg and only for a few months (this was for racing heart too not for ectopics because I only had them really infrequently then).  Was put on Propranolol a couple of years ago because of the physical anxious symptoms like fast heart and shaking which they work really well for.  Also wasn't having these horrible ectopics all the time when I started it.  Funnily enough, a cardiologist said the same to me about maybe they're more frequent because the heart is slowed down.  These really frequent ectopics only really ramped up around a year ago, before that I was just having a few every now and then throughout the day.

I'm pretty sure it's hormones as last month I had hardly any and haven't done anything different, so it must be my own hormones going haywire  ::)

JoAnnFran, one other thing, I spoke to Dr Sanjay Gupta online, and he mentioned about making sure you have enough magnesium, also plenty of fluids and salt.  (obviously no one should take this advice literally, it was in a conversation with me, for anyone reading, too much of anything is dangerous)

I think our hormones can affect our electrolytes, as well as directly affect the heart.  I saw a cardiologist face to face and he said the effect of hormones is not of concern to them as long as you are otherwise healthy and the heart is healthy.

I've definitely been more stable on evorel sequi, rather than on the beta blockers, but they did help.  Hope it improves soon  :)
