Testosterone results a bit worried -Am I in range ?
« on: May 22, 2024, 06:26:05 PM »

Hi Ladies,

I have my medichecks Testosterone results. Not sure if I am over or OK or way over? Louise Newson states that the upper limit is 2.40mnol I believe? I am not sure what the recommended  range is? I know the BMS has said don't test free T now.( probably a cost cutting issue).

Anyway my results are :

TESTOSTERONE  1.66 nmol/L - range 0.101- 1.42   - so by the medichecks  range I am over!

FREE T  0.007 nmol/L range 0-0.02

SHBG 200nmol/L which has always been high.

My estrogen is always around the 350 mark.

I am not sure whether I am in range and why medichecks range is lower than what I have read on the Newson site?

Could someone reassure me as I don't want to be over the upper range. I am only using a tiny amount and being very conservative - one tube of testogel lasts me 20 days!

Many thanks in advance

Hi - My level at my last check was 1.6.. It has been 1.9 and 1.8.  1.8 is the maximum level they use at the clinic where I get tested (private dr).  When it was 1.9 meno dr said don't worry as I wasn't having any negative effects from it.

Hope that helps? x

Thank you for replying- I am new to T so having a menopause panic!  I haven't any negative effects so far.  The NHS haven't bothered testing me so i have done it myself. It seems every lab range is different, not sure why that is.

I just had my 3 month check too. I had it tested twice as I was having 2 different panel, each blood draw was within 30 min of each other and the numbers were different so I would not put too much weight on them.

The first was
Total T 1.41 (range 0 - 1.42)
Shbg 98
Free androgen index 1.4% (range 0.8-9)

The 2nd just measured my total T and was 1.62.

I am dosing similar to you and have no noticed any negative effects either. When I first started taking it I got an increase in libido at ovulation but it seems to have stopped now. Currently not seeing much change in energy whether of not I take it but it has helped with my reflux. Are you getting any positive benefits OP?

Hello ladies.

I had my Testosterone level checked by the NHS a few months ago. The normal range for females was given as 0.0 - 1.8 and the method used was Mass Spectrometry.

I don't use testosterone and my natural level was within range at 0.5.  I have used Testosterone in the past ( Androfeme from Newson Health) but I didn't feel any great benefit so I stopped. The Nurse Practitioner at my GP surgery was testing my Oestradiol amongst other things so I think she just wanted to be sure that T was in the normal range.

I hope this is helpful and take care ladies.

Hi thanks for the reassurance. The positive effects are that my dry eyes have improved. I also have more energy. My dreams are more vivid , and my sleep has mostly improved. Initially my hair was slightly greasier, but strangely that has resolved back to normal.

Thank you for the info . Reassuring that the NHS range was given as 1.8 - so I am in range. I did start T a while ago and got a burning Foof, :o so I stopped . This time I have had no problems in that area .

This is really good to read  :)  Suspecting the decline in T was responsible for my worsening dry eye condition after oophorectomies I asked to start T some years ago & did find it helpful for dryness, so have posted lots on here about the association with links to research.  Lovely to see someone else report an improvement.  I also found it helped with energy, stamina, muscle strength, focus, positivity, libido, possibly sleep & more.  I hope it continues to work well for you.

Thanks Wrensong,
As well as the eye improvement- I do feel less anxious and my stamina has improved - the afternoon slumps are less. I wish they would do more research.

Oh dear, my T is way higher than that since my implant!
Can't say that I notice any obviously androgenic effects but, assuming those guide numbers are not excessively conservative, I'll probably need a re-think about my implant...

Hi, the ranges I posted were from an article posted by Louise Newson. They seem a bit higher  in range than others mentioned. Also it may depend on estrogen levels ?

Pepperminty that all sounds good & I agree we need a lot more research & understanding of this phase of life.  With the dry eye, I'd begun to think I was the only one who'd found T helps & yet research suggests there does seem to be an association, either with the decline in T or an imbalance between E&T.  A lot of women post on here that dry eye syndrome is a problem for them at menopause but you're the first I can remember (other than me) who's said supplementing with T has helped their DES.  I wonder whether the effect is more obvious in those of us who've had oophorectomies &/or for whom the DES is severe.  Whatever - I'm pleased it's helping you & it feels important to raise awareness of its lesser known effects on here, especuially as DES is not just a matter of discomfort, but can progress to damage the eye if not well managed.

Hi ladies,
Testosterone is used to treat dogs with dry eye. I can’t find the original research I read before treating a male spaniel but in haste I found this:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8165631/

I’ve just had a T test with the NHS, the range was 0 - 3 nmol/L. Mine was 3.5, Doctor was happy and I’ll continue on one sachet a week.

Typo. The range was 0. - 3.1 nmol/L.

AmandaJR, thank you for posting the link.  Another interesting article  :) I've bookmarked quite a few on androgens & dry eye (& Sjogren's) over recent years but couldn't find this one among them.

Hi Wrensong,

I agree. There are T receptors all over the body and very little research into the subject for women  ::).  All drug testing was only done on men by men until a few years ago as women were deemed unreliable. Only since 1993, the National Institutes of Health has mandated that trials should be run on both men and women.
My dry eye is much better I would say 70% . The NHS are now cutting down on prescribed medication for dry eyes , refusing to prescribe the more expensive drops unless "there is a medical reason! ". That is not going down the preventative route and setting up problems later down the line!   I hope that your DES continues to improve. Macci berry is also good for dry eye.
