Ovestin questions!
« on: April 15, 2024, 05:08:42 PM »

Hi everyone.

Been having recurring UTIs
.
Saw Urology nurse today, she is giving me Ovestin which I've never used before. She said to apply it right at the pee hole :/

Is this right? I've just started Vagifem too, I presume it's ok to use both? How much should I take of each?

Thanksy

Hi - have fresh urine samples been sent to a Lab.?  If. not it's more likely to be vaginal atrophy which mimics urine infection--type symptoms really really well!

When did U start the Vagifem?   Advice from myself is to insert nightly for at least 2-3 weeks, the 'ovestin' can be applied around the vulval area initially in the morning and evening.  Gently around the dry areas of the vulva/vagina.  Once symptoms ease then use both at night cutting out the morning 'ovestin'.

Each VA treatment is a measured amount: 'vagifem' is a pessary I believe, 'ovestin' is delivered via a plastic applicator which can be washed in warm water after use.

Thanks CLKD your a champ! ;)

I started Vagifem about 5 days ago, 1 10mg tablet a day inserted.
Not ever had ovestin so wasn't sure if what nurse said was right, about putting it outside the vagina and on the pee hole,
but seems ok now you have enlightened me. Should it normally go inside vag though?

If using 'vagifem' 1 may not need mositorsier [sp] on the outer areas, some find that 'ovestin' used on the outer labia helpful: I smear either KY or Ovestin it between the lips to stop them itching due to dryness. I use 'ovestin' internally as that's what the GP prescribed.

I use vagifem 3 times a week internally and use a small amount of estriol cream (similar but weaker than ovestin) twice a week externally. Have been doing this for well over a year and generally keeps things comfortable.

Did the nurse actually say that!
A lot of women use Ovestin with Vagifem. You only need a small amount smeared on the outside covering the vagina and 'pee hole'.
I use Vagifem every day with Ovestin, a tube can last me 3 to 4 months which should give you an indication on how much to use.
You don't need to use the ovestin inside the vagina.

I use Ovestin/Estriol every night externally, a fingertip amount is enough, apply all around and around the urethra/pee hole lol. Rub in well as it sometimes stings at first if you leave clumps not rubbed in. I apply Bepanthan after or you can use with moisturiser. If it don't sting then you won't need anything else. I use Vagifem internally most nights too but Ovestin is better for the external bits and Vagifem sorts out internally. Using both should sort everything out but it may take a few weeks to improve completely depending how bad things are down there. A tube of Ovestin lasts me 3 weeks.

Wow, Dierdre, Ovestin will last me 3 to 4 months with Vagifem and it just goes to demonstrate how we are all so different in our requirements when it comes to treating Vaginal Atrophy.  GP's take note!

You must use a very tiny amount Ayesha to make it last 3-4 months. Maybe I should try using less and see if it still does the job.

Just a small amount night and morning seems to work for me, alongside the daily Vagifem of course.

I'm using vagifem daily now, after a long spate of recurring thrush last year I've not managed to get it back down to 5 per week, sometimes manage with 6 a week but sore a bit the day after not using so not worth it. I've always been worse externally and was diagnosed with Lichens sclerosus years ago and was prescribed Ovestin externally as part of that treatment daily,  with steroid cream     (Dermovate) as needed.  I can only use Ovestin at night though as it still stings even after using for years and I have to apply Bepanthen over it to stop the stinging, I'm super sensitive.
I applied a small pea sized amount last night instead of a fingertip amount, it didn't sting as much, obviously less to rub in and still ok this morning with no irritation. Perhaps i was using too much and less is more in this scenario. I'll see how it goes.

I hope it makes a difference but as we know VA is such an unpredictable condition with treatment sometimes needing tweaking now and again.
So far so good with my doses but if something like an illness or stress gets in the way flare ups do happen but at least they are very manageable now and the symptoms never as severe as they once were. When they say treatment is for life, that is an absolute given!

I am manging to get down to 6 Vagifem a week and I am going to try for 5 a week, but baby steps it is  ::)
