Mirena side effects
« on: March 29, 2024, 05:08:58 PM »

I had the Mirena fitted on Sunday and feel horrible. I'm hoping its general tiredness and anxiety around the procedure and subsequent discomfort, but I'm worrying it may be  side effects.

I am having bad headaches and nausea and am quite emotional. The reason I went on HRT in the first place several years ago was due to severe hormonal headaches. They were greatly improved whilst on evorel conti.

I know some people don't get on with the Mirena. Ive always been very sensitive to fluctuations in oestrogen but never had any real problems with progesterone. Does it sound typical of Mirena side effects? Also, do any side effects improve over time as I know it is early days.

Hello SL
(My fellow headache warrior)

I had the Mirena fitted last autumn; my experience has been positive overall but it did take a few weeks to settle down with the bleeding/period pains. I got a period almost the next day (as in not spotting, went on for several days) and each month for the first 2/3 months I got what I can only describe as a "phantom" period, where I had the symptoms of a cycle but no bleed. I raised it with my specialist at the follow up appointment and he explained that my body was still doing it's own thing in the background as I was still peri rather than post menopause.

I do also get the odd headache still but absolutely nowhere near what I had on either Evorel Sequi or Utrogestan (I could not tolerate conti on either regime hence opting eventually for the Mirena).

You are right of course that some people just don't get on with the Mirena. I had the same progestogen in my pill (Levenogestrel) and tolerated it well in my 20s so I took a gamble as I'd not really got on with anything else. I would give it a little longer and see how you feel x

Thanks both. Hi Mogster, when I saw your name it felt like a blast from the past! How are you getting on? Lovely to hear from you.

Can I ask re the Mirena did the bleeding get worse before it got better because I have gone from very slight to constant ( but not heavy). Also my cramping has changed to a specific squeezing pain in the appendix area. This is pretty constant. I am feeling quite worried about it as it's not what I expected, but of course my issues may also in part be due to the fibroid I had removed at the same time. I am now worrying about possible infection, perforation, misplacement, etc!

Hello SL...
Aww lovely to see you here too, I hadn't been on here other than the odd lurk for quite a while, and I clocked your name too :) Hope you're doing ok... well, other than the Mirena worries.

So the first day I had it done about noon, came straight back to work and it was like very strong period cramps. I took some ibuprofen and had a hot water bottle, and it was better in a few hours. However... I went and panicked myself the next day as I went to use the loo (as in not a wee!) and started myself bleeding. I got crampy again for a few hours and then it stopped. The cramps continued and on the Monday, I started a full proper period (had it put in on the Friday). It petered out after about 3/4 days and then dropped back down to spotting. This went on for about 4/5 weeks so I just used a liner but I never had another full bleed, and the bleeding eventually stopped completely.

I did have to ring my friend a couple of times (she's had Mirenas for years) and she reassured me that it was quite normal and the body's natural reaction to a foreign body (which it technically is). I did wonder the same as you about perforation or whether it has slipped a bit because I was convinced I could feel it poking me (!) but I kind of understood her words because even when I'd had ultrasounds in the past (internal ones), all the poking and prodding around up there was like a trauma to my insides and I did bleed every time afterwards.

I'd say as it's only been a week it is still early days. Also mine was a straightforward Mirena insertion without fibroid issue, but if you're worried at all, particularly if you feel unwell or start running a temperature, get yourself checked out. I would have thought infection would cause abnormal discharge/aroma and pain that doesn't go with regular OTC meds.

I totally understand the worry, if I hadn't had mine done privately I might have gone and got checked at my GP just to check all was in the right place. In the turnout I didn't need to but don't hesitate if it doesn't improve xx

Hi, if it’s any help I had the mirena fitted last August . It was done privately under general anaesethic as I had a small procedure at the same time.
I had previously been on utrogestan vaginally but was fed up with the mess and other ones didn’t suit.
I had bleeding and cramping the first week. After a week I felt absolutely terrible in myself, so awful that I asked the consultant if it could be removed at my 4 week check up appointment.
I’m pleased to say that by the time of that appointment I was feeling a great deal better and kept the coil.
I put the awfulness down to the initial rush of progesterone and potentially the old progesterone still being in my system.
I did get a bit of bleeding on and off for a few months  which gradually cleared.
Other than that - all fine. I hope you settle with yours
