Having real issues with progesterone
« on: February 06, 2024, 07:21:43 PM »

Hi all, I’m new to this forum but it looks like there are some people on here that have been on quite a journey with menopause, so I’d appreciate your advice please  :) I’m peri menopausal and I’ve been on HRT for the past 2 months. I started with insomnia and low mood 4 months ago. I’ve never had any issues with sleep up to that point. It’s the waking up after 2-3 hours with a strong pulse and not being able to get back to sleep that is so hard! I also developed pulsitile tinnitus and anxiety. I was started on HRT 2 months ago, Everol Sequi patches. The Everol 50 patch made me feel much better and restored sleep after about 10 days. Then when I switched to the oestrogen/progesterone patch the insomnia and low mood returned with a vengeance. When I switched back to the Everol 50 only I felt wired but very happy. My GP switched me to Utrogestan orally for the progesterone part and again the insomnia kicked in although not low mood more anxiety and feeling constantly wired with palpitations. I then went to Newson Health and my Everol patch was increased to 75 which triggered insomnia again after it had settled a bit on just the Everol 50 patch. Then I was advised to take 100mg of Utrogestan vaginally and that again triggered insomnia! I’ve asked for another review of my treatment but I’m at my wits end with the insomnia. The other symptoms, although unpleasant, I can live with for now. Has anyone else had this experience and found a regime that works? It’s been suggested that I’m sensitive to the hormones in HRT but I seem to be largely ok with the oestrogen on its own. I have read other posts from women saying they have also had issues with progesterone. Any help would be very much appreciated  :)

I've broken this down.   :welcomemm:  A lot of people suffer with the progesterone part of the regime.  For that reason some do a long cycle ....... hopefully some1 will be along with advice on that.  Women with a womb should have progesterone of some type to cleanse the womb regularly.

Lack of sleep affects every aspect of Life.  50-75 is a huge amount at once for most ladies.  Some find cutting patches helps or keeping to 50 with 75 once/twice a week initially.  It really can be Trial and Error.  'sensitivity' is mentioned when other causes can't be decided upon.  Hormones are natural, it's the rise and fall during peri-menopause that throws up anomalies.

How old R you and what were your periods up to B4 you opted for replacement?  Which symptom did you hope to ease first?

Browse round.  Make notes ;-)

This is sounding similar to me, but my main symptom is a very hot face. Evorel 50 made me feel quite sick so switched to Evorel 25 and the tablets. Im only 2 weeks into the patch and so far the hot face hasnt ended.
I really hope things get better for you

I also have disrupted sleep with utro. I take it at 11am and it seems to have worn off by bedtime.

Hi All thanks for the replies
CLKD I am 47 and my periods have always been regular until the past year when they have varied slightly. I’m trying to fix the insomnia as a priority because it’s killing me!

Princesstina77 it’s awful at first isn’t it! I hope things get better for you too  :)

Shelia99 thanks for the tip! I’ll keep this in mind if I need to stay on Utro

I’m still navigating the site and working out how to post so sorry for the delay in replying  :)

I hope you get the insomnia sorted 🙏 I can’t imagine getting through the already stressful days with no sleep 🤯

Sleep is so important when anxiety is at play & I think the only reason I have swerved the insomnia is some anxiety meds…they are a god send…

I can relate to the wired feelings on Evorel though. They were kind of welcome in a strange way because it was a very “up” kind of wired but it did feel a little bit exhilarating…like I’d imagine being high…

The hot face is a regular for me aswell…nowhere else, just a boiling hot furnace face…I hear you & hope you manage to get some sleep 😴 it makes everything that bit more manageable xx

Charleyfarley - you also get a boiling hot face? Like sticking your face into stinging nettles? I spoke to my Dr about it today and she has suggested staying with the Evorel25 for now and taking the tablet progesterone as planned for 2 weeks to see how I get on. Im really hoping we'll work out what dose I really need or I may have to give up
