How do countries know if we are visitors or working ?  I won't be going anywhere that taxes me!

They charge in hotels. I paid tax in Majorca years ago, 8€ per night per room. They didn't charge when I went there last month but maybe TUI pay and it's included now in the cost. My son paid in Rhodes last month, they had 2 rooms at 7€ per night so an extra 98€ they hadn't budgeted or known about until they got there.
Lanzarote not doing it yet.

The beaches in the Algarve are lovely. Apartments are better equipped than Spain and the supermarkets sell almost everything ours do.  Less than 3 hours away.

I think the Portuguese are more friendly than other European destinations. We been about 15 times 🤪

Never been to Portugal but sounds a nice change. I was going back to Majorca later in the year, been going to the same lovely hotel for years but the protests and new rules have put me off. Plus the airport at Palma was a nightmare, utter chaos. I don't think the protests are in Lanzarote yet, think it's mainly Tenerife.

Where abouts do you recommend littleminnie?

It depends what you like. We like a nice beach so Quarteira/Vilamoura area.  There is a nice marina at Vilamoura.
Olhas De Agua is nice too, only a small place with a small beach but enough restaurants/bars etc.   
I’d avoid Albufeira.   We went earlier in the year but I wouldn’t go back.

I like a nice long beach for a long walk every day.  I've heard Albufeira is a party town now full of hen and stag parties so that's a no go for me.  Quarteira/Vilamoura sounds more like it.

We only ever get to Lisbon but if you love shops and restaurants it's fabulous.
Madeira too is a wonderful destination,their flowers ,plants and trees are stunning

I agree Jaypo, Lisbon and Porto are really nice places to visit.   Lisbon is really cheap too.

And the Portuguese tarts are delicious 😘
