Stopped HRT
« on: January 02, 2024, 11:07:38 AM »

So after 3 yrs of HRT hell I decided to stop taking it.   Battled with zero GP guidance and having to rethink it every 6 mths as it would start to disagree with me.  Like someone else said, turns into a science experiment with your body and mind.

2 days off and I feel like a new person!!  I literally feel mentally clearer and physically relaxed, the difference is enormous, I'm gobsmacked!

I wonder if I have literally poisoned my poor body the last 3 years? My entire being is like it can breathe again.

I'm 50 BTW, full menopause at 47 without much drama.    Took HRT to save my eyesight (macular degeneration, oestrogen receptors in eyes)

I sometimes think that the body mayB doesn't requirement replacement.  Who suggested HRT initially?

MayB make an appt with an eye specialist for a review.  In the meantime, keeping a mood/food/symptom diary may be of use.

Let us know how you get on.

I agree, hrt isn't for everyone and is very much trial and error for some.

I have always seen hrt as a much needed support for me  not a cure. I Was in hell prior to hrt, and it has taken a lot of tweaking to reach some stability, but I do know that I may need to alter things as my body changes. I am still peri ( even at 57 😠) so am prone to fluctuations. Atm it works for me but you may well find that hrt is not what your own body needs.
May be worth looking at alternatives to work on individual symptoms should they creep back or as CLKD says look at eye care and if any proven supplements may help?

So many on here have never taken hrt, it's definitely not for all. Take care x

I did my own macular research as like HRT it's another topic GPs know nothing about 🤨

My GPs response was "well I don't know about macular but every woman your age should be on HRT anyway so nothing to lose"  and prescribed standard 2 pumps and continuous utrogestan despite no meno symptoms.  This was great for 6 mths but then it all went miserably wrong and clearly was too high dose.   Ongoing battle to tolerate even lower dose ever since.

GP not interested in referring macular to eye specialist, another battle I will have when feeling more lively

Don't ask your GP, go to an optician for advice.  Ours is very good and he/I are talking more about menopause than eye conditions  ::). GPs who respond without referring should retire!

My dad had macular degeneration. I think there may have been a thread on here in the past couple of months.

We do owe it to ourselves to do our own research in addition to working with our gps. Hence the need for forums like this for those who actually have experiences to share and advise.

My own research is what got me on the HRT.   Good info for any other unusually young macular sufferers  at least.

We have oestrogen receptors in our eyeballs so keeping them "fed" with HRT helps to keep macular from progressing.

Oh yes, I do it regularly.  I was, diagnosed at 47,  no age for this disease, doing all I can to keep it at bay.    I have to monitor my 12 Yr old son too as its hereditary.
