mirena v utrogeston? which is safest at 57
« on: November 27, 2023, 07:40:20 AM »

Hi,  Ive been on Utrogeston and oestrogel 8 years very happily. Im 57 and now on a continuous regime... switched from sequential 2 years ago at 55.
Im booked for a hysteroscopy  soon under GA to investigate some recent PV bleeding.  USS showed 7mm endometrium and possible polyp and fibroids.  This is my worse nightmare. I have never been pregnant  and have never had a GA.
Ive been offered a Mirena inserted at time of GA... but my issue is  both the taking it out again at 61 and trying to find out which progesterone is safest as Ive always understood utrogeston to be the best in terms of least side effects and better safety profile " body identical / more natural etc" .
I am  also completely phobic about pelvic exams/ smears etc. the vaginal USS was very painful and I have recently started using vagifem for VA. I delayed having a smear for 10+ years due to this fear... got up to date earlier this year and it was also a horrible experience.
I did try and ask the NHS consultant but she was not very forthcoming about evidence or safety or risks.
Im obese too  unfortunatey and due to go on a long haul flight for a dream holiday a couple of days after the possible fitting.  I dont want the mirena to be playing up ( causing more bleeding )  for the holiday.

I only have a week to try and decide.... Please help with any views ladies.

Hi
I can't help with the risks question, hopefully someone else will come along with good reference material on this. I just wanted to share my positive experience of having a coil fitted early this year, at the age of 59, following post menopausal bleeding. Apart from spotting on and off for three months I wouldn't know it's there.  It sounds as if they are possibly giving you GA due to your huge discomfort and phobia which is good.
I'd say be prepared for some bleeding on your holiday, for me it wasn't much more than bloody discharge rather than full on period type bleed but we're all different.
I'd also strongly recommend that you notify your holiday insurer about the investigation that is underway. You will probably find that they exclude anything to do with this particular problem but will continue to cover you for anything else. Not telling them risks invalidating your medical cover.
Most of all (and I know this is pointless, but I'll say it anyway) try not to worry.

thanks Suzie, Good to hear you are happy with the Mirena.
My Gut feeling is still that I dont want it... mainly as when its in, if im not happy of having problems it could be a saga trying to get it removed again with my nervous disposition.   Its the invasiveness of it that turns me .
Id even be prepared to try and reduce oestogel to 1 pump daily for a bit ( from 2 pumps)  or perhaps increase utrogeston .
Maybe I should try and get all this delayed till after the holiday anyway... I hadnt thought of informing insurers as its all happened so quickly.

I hadn't thought about potential removal when you have such anxiety, it's definitely a consideration.

In hindsight I do think I was pushed/strongly persuaded to have the coil and, whilst it has been a positive experience for me so far, I didn't investigate the alternative options.  It does sound as if delaying until after your holiday might be better for you, even if only to give you more time to look into alternatives- as long as there is no urgency for the investigations. Or, if they need to go ahead with the investigations, then make the decision not to have the coil just yet whilst you look into other options for progesterone management.

Hope this doesn't all cause you too much worry, sounds as if you have a wonderful holiday to look forward to!
