Mirena and hair loss
« on: September 16, 2023, 07:35:26 AM »

Once my scans are complete, providing there’s nothing untoward, my doc suggested Mirena as the best option to deal with the 21 day cycle of bleeds I’ve been getting with both Evorel Conti and the Evorel 50/Utrogestan regime I’m currently on.

Done research, and one thing that bothers me is whether it will cause hair loss. I have very fine hair and it became very sparse when I took a 2.5 year break from HRT, and since I went back on HRT just over a year ago, it’s looking great, and people comment on it!

How many of you on Mirena experienced hair loss?

Thank you. I saw that it affects around 5% of people. I think I will at least give it a try though

Hi Flossie Fiddler

I have lots of hair (fine but lots), always had. I was taking cyclo-progynova for years with no issues of hair loss and the progestin in the Mirena is similar.

However, when I took provera, my hair definitely was thinning. I was literally shedding. Have you ever tried provera and had similar issues?

Hi, thanks for responding. I’ve never used Provera, so don’t know if it would affect me that way. The Mirena would be my last option I think. Have an appointment today with the hospital gynae.

When I took norethisterone my hair was shedding massively. I started with hair issues in perimenopause. I believe the synthetic progesterone was the straw that broke the camel's back!
