Mirena coil removal
« on: December 13, 2024, 02:37:40 PM »

Hi
I had my coil removed 2 months ago as it had been in for 9 years! I have been on Conti patches for 2-3 years too. I bled for about a week after the coil was removed then nothing until now, 2 months later I am bleeding again, quite heavily at times. The other night I bled through everything to the mattress  :' My GP has referred me for an ultrasound (5 days still no appointment) she also gave me some tablets to ease the flow. Still bleeding a week later and although there’s less it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop!! Is this really normal at the age of 58???

Some women still are having endogenous ovarian activity at 58, and as you had the IUS you don't know if or when you would have stopped.

Particularly if you only developed perimenopausal symptoms in your mind 50's (going by when you started HRT) you could just be a late bloomer 😁

However it does need to be investigated to exclude endometrial pathology.

Another mirena might be a good option for your progestogen going forward if the combined patch isn't keeping you bleed free.

Not sure there is any normal because it's going to depend on individual hormone levels.

Had a mirena fitted in my 40s due to heavy bleeding, and that then went on to become my P element when I started HRT. Had it removed at the age of about 53 because I stopped HRT and thought I'd probably entered full menopause. Very minimal bleeding post removal.

Previously I had taken tranexamic acid for several years.

The ultrasound should give you some answers.
