Burning pain and soreness vaginal atrophy
« on: July 31, 2023, 01:37:14 PM »

Recently diagnosed with vaginal atrophy. Put on HRT patches also on vagirux and ovestin daily for 14 days. Then twice weekly. Prescribed hydromol cream and also using Yes VM. 4 weeks in still having a flare up twice weekly of burning pain and external throbbing feeling of holding in a wee or constant need to wee. Any advice on how long this takes to settle. Any advice on what pain relief is available other than paracetamol which has no effect. Thanks in advance.

Hello Wonderwoman and welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I have found I need to use Ovestin (which is localised oestrogen for VA) every single day. If I miss one day then I am very sore. It can take a few months for VA to settle so please do not despair.

Some tips I have found helpful are: I switched from baths to showers. I only wash in emollient. I apply emollient to the vulva before a shower, wash it off in the shower and then reapply some more to act as a barrier.

It is great you have the hydromol and you could use this to wash with if you wanted to.

I also need to use the treatment every day and that's two years on from diagnoses. It took four months for the treatment to start to take effect, consequently reducing the dose to twice a week is totally ridiculous, doing that is not going to have any effect on your symptoms.  Ignore what the leaflet say's and use every day until you alone know when it's time to reduce, if you can at all.

I didn't find any pain relief that helped when I was in your situation, but with continues VA treatment you will feel better eventually, just needs lots of patience.

Get a dose of VA treatment up there now and again this evening: keep on with is for as long as necessary.  Let us know how you get on.

Thank you everyone.

Unfortunately I don't have a shower but I do suffer from eczema so I have lots of barrier creams which I will start applying to the area before and after a bath. I was advised to use the Ovestin daily for 8 weeks and am using this with the applicator to apply internally and put a little round the outside area too.

In terms of the suggestions to go back to using the vagirux every evening. My GP recommendation was twice weekly after the first two weeks and I do not have sufficient vagirux to increase it to every evening. This is something I might need to discuss with my GP if things don't improve soon.

If you wanted to you could get a shower hose to put on the taps.

I think it is a good idea to discuss getting more vagirux from your GP. I hope they are helpful.

It's what I had to do when it was obvious twice weekly was having no effects on my symptoms. I phoned my doctor and she immediately said to increase to every day. I've since had a medication review and my VA treatment did not come into the conversation.
I hope you get the same reaction from your GP, we can't have one rule for one and not the other. Do let us know how you get on, it will help others.

I do have a fitted shower head over the bath. I use it for hair washing so will use it as a shower instead of having a bath until things hopefully settle down.

My GP also mentioned the option of the vaginal ring. Has anyone had any experience with this?
