Hysteroscopy Outpatient experience today
« on: July 10, 2023, 11:03:54 AM »

Hi , this is my personal experience , the procedure was carried out at John Radcliffe Women’s department Oxford , outpatient.
Been on current  Hrt for around 4 years , I am 56 , use 50mg patches Estradiol change twice a week , 100mg Utrogeston tablet one a day orally , Estradiol 10mg pessaries  and Tostran Gel twice a week below prescribed dosage as I had to fiddle with this to suit me.
Following bleeding , first time in over 5 years got referred to have scans , ultrasound and trans vaginal both of those fine but lining was 8.4mm so got referred for a hysteroscopy .
Scared myself silly ready all the women’s horror stories of this , I haven’t had kids so that made it worse.
Anyway just got back literally , from start to finish staff were absolutely amazing , talked me through it , asked my if I had any questions ? Said I was worried as not had children . They said I could request a GA if need be . I said I’m here now let’s give it a go , if it got too uncomfortable they said they would stop I could return for a GA.
So , I got ready on the chair and it started, all ok , then they use water pressure to open the cervix ok not nice but ok. I had a trainee  doing it she was really nice , couldn’t get through the second part of cervix was tightly shut , she asked the head consultant to come and see . She came in and took over at request of trainee , started again, was ok just cramping and pressure from the water going into uterus like period pain . She got through “second door “ as they called it.  :)
I was ok just bit uncomfortable . They found a polyp , everything else was fine . Took biopsy which was a sharp quick pain , then removed polyp bit more painful but not unbearable .
Whole thing took a little while as it was difficult to access my womb but not traumatising or unbearable  , had taken paracetamol and ibuprofen before hand as that’s my go to pain relief that works for me.
Everyone is different but truly it was ok, would I have it done again that way ? Yes no problem bit Of cramping and bleeding but am ok.
I’m not trying to disprove other people’s experiences just I think it’s hard to find experiences that aren’t horrendous , as I found when looking , before my appointment .
As I said staff were amazing , trainee did nothing wrong , as I probably wasn’t the easiest patient having not had kids , they asked many times if I was ok to continue , not the most comfortable procedure but truly not as bad as I had thought it would be.
Hope this makes some other ladies build up to the appointment a little less traumatic than mine.

Thanks so much for posting this tcg10. As you say, it is difficult to find positive experiences when researching on the internet so I'm sure this will reassure many women especially those who have not had children.

I have found the John Radcliffe to be an excellent hospital with regards to women's health - both for myself and for friends and also my poor daughter-in-law who has bad endometriosis.

Taz x  :)

That is really helpful tcg10 thank you so much for posting.
I haven't had children either so it's good to be prepared should I need a hysteroscopy.

I had a similar experience. I wouldn’t chose to do it again but I could as it’s not as bad as I thought.

Thank you for your post, it's so helpful to hear about your experience. Hope you are feeling ok.
I had a similar experience, it was initially only a transvaginal scan, but then they decided to do a biopsy and a further treatment at the same time. I also had no children and have cervical stenosis. I haven't prepared myself and used no painkillers but they gave me a local anaesthetic and they have been so kind and considerate. It was not enjoyable but it was bearable and after the treatment I felt fine.
