Stomach pain
« on: June 28, 2023, 07:50:12 PM »

I've been suffering from stomach pain the last week. On and off, although mainly on today, I've had a niggling pain in the centre of my stomach, just below the breastbone. Been to the GP today who says it's indigestion. I personally think it's gastritis. I am burping a lot, am constipated again on and off and just feel generally unwell.

I think it's hormonal and I'm mid cycle, have other symptoms to suggest this. I've read that a peak of something, oestrogen or progesterone, can cause stomach problems?

Is this the next thing? Am I finally moving on 😁! Anyone else suffer stomach problems in peri or am I just getting old!

Maybe acid reflux? Hiatus hernia?
Peri can worsen this condition, and some seem to have this thrust upon them during peri.

Few links on here about acid reflux\hiatus hernia, may be worth you checking to see if to your symptoms fit. This condition can be controlled with drugs and also avoiding foods that may set the indigestion off.

Sadly hormones and age both work to give us a lots of these little gifts...🙄

Gastritis usually involves vomiting.

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax: hiatus hernia is common in peri-menopause.  I've had indigestion-type symptoms for years: reflux with a lot of extra saliva : a feeling of pain from the middle of the area between the lower rib cage which radiates up to the chin, neck, head - with no radiation into the arms, sweating or nausea.

Have U tried over the counter treatment?  What did the GP suggest?

"itis" is inflammation, i.e. appendicitis, layngitisis ......... I have used Milk of Magnesia liquid as well as chewy sweets [can't remember the name] successfully.  After I developed a related cough the GP prescribed Omeprazolol.

Hi Marshabookworm,

I have had phases of gastro issues over the last 10 years that have come and gone. Symptoms come from nowhere (i.e. no obvious change of diet/habit) and vary from burping, gurgling, diahorrea, wind and chest pain. I initially had lots of tests that thankfully did not reveal anything sinister but also didn't explain what was happening. I now put any episodes down to "the change" and/or stress and they generally pass within a few days/weeks. But if it's anything going on longer than that I suggest getting it checked out.

Worth trying a probiotic(Yakult), ginger or mint tea or something to settle your stomach or gaviscon/nexium to see if that helps first.

I've had those type of symptoms for years, I've had all the tests. I have a hiatus hernia but I get bits if gastritis and ive had an ulcer. Ive used omeprazole intermittently.  My symptoms returned in the new year, slightly different and more persistent. I had another endoscopy.  They found gastritis but also cell change in my oesophagus due to acid reflux.  Barratts Oesophagus.  The consultant also thought ibuprofen had contributed to the problems.  Don't take aspirin or ibuprofen if you get gastritis. Acid creates gas and causes pain in your chest.
Always get checked out if symptoms persist and don't respond to treatment.  I've changed my habits. I stopped drinking alcohol,  I eat smaller portions,  nothing that increases acid and I don't eat less than 3 hours before bed. It's made a big difference
