Hi, new member struggling with Mirena Coil
« on: June 19, 2023, 11:43:31 AM »

Hi all, I'm hoping some of you might have a view on my concern.
I had the Mirena coil fitted nearly three weeks ago and was prescribed tablets - Estradiol valerate 2mg . I had little bleeding initially but I then started to have abdominal pain and discharge and was prescribed antibiotics, although the swab came back negative for infection. I then started bleeding and have now been bleeding for nearly two weeks. It is more than spotting, very bright and fresh blood. Going through two sanitary towels a day and still have low abdominal ache. Is this just likely to be the coil settling into my body as i have read some folk bleed for a good while.?
really appreciate some advice before returning to a very busy GP practice.

Thanks to you all in advance.

Hi!  What does the Nurse Practitioner at your Surgery suggest? It may well be effects of the Mirena coil - if you put 'Mirena' into the search box there will be threads - make notes ;-).

Do U take any pain relief?

Tell us more about yourself: family, pets, how your periods have been behaving .......

Hi
I had a Mirena fitted in January (aged 59, 10 yrs post meno, 1yr on HRT and had bleeding, investigation showed slightly thickened womb lining so coil suggested). I bled for a couple of weeks and then it changed to what I described as dirty discharge. This carried on for several weeks, when I had my 6wk coil check the practice nurse seemed surprised I was still bleeding so asked me to go back after another 4wks. I was still having dirty discharge at that point so they checked with the gynae team at the hospital (where I'd had it fitted) and they said it could continue for 6 months or so! I have to admit that after 10yrs of no periods this did concern me and I questioned my decision to have the coil fitted! But, unlike you, I haven't had any pain at all.

The bleeding/discharge stopped after about 3mths but then I've had a couple of episodes of spotting since, I've started to keep a note of the dates to see if there is a pattern and to be able to tell my GP if I have to go back.

Maybe have a chat with your nurse when you have your 6week check, just to put your mind at rest.

Fingers crossed it stops for you soon

A dirty discharge is probably old blood that hasn't had enough hormone to cleanse the womb properly which medics don't seem to cotton on to  ::)

Let us know how you get on.

Hello Kkelanor,  :)

It doesn’t sound right to me, Mirena should not cause pain or bleedings, if it’s fitted in right way. I would go back to GP. I have Mirena for 4 years now, was fitted due to heavy bleedings, I did not experience any pain, except for the first couple of days, I was taking paracetamol and it stoped my bleedings during very short period of time after that. I had couple of side affects like big and painful breasts and bad blood circulation in my legs, they where completely gone after 2 weeks or so.

I hope I am wrong as everybody has unique body and we can experience  different reactions on the same medication. :)

Thank you so much everyone. I will go back to my GP as we do not have a nurse practitioner.
The blood continues to be fresh and still painful and now affecting my mood, so good to have your support in going back for another check.
