unexpected bleeding changing to a longer cycle
« on: November 09, 2023, 07:10:20 AM »

Hello
I have been on sequential HRT for about 6 month (50 estradot patch and cyclogest). I am quite progesterone intolerant and after speaking to my menopause doctor I decided to try to change to a longer 6 week cycle so as to reduce the time spent feeling a bit rubbish. My last progesterone phase started on 1st October. My first question (as I forgot to ask the doctor) is for those women who do a long cycle, do you just calculate the date exactly to 6 weeks each time or have set dates ie always start on either the 14th or the 1st (alternate months?)

My main question is that it is the 9th today and I had been planning to start my progesterone on the 12th or 14th. But yesterday I started with a very light bit of bleeding (mainly when I wipe) which looks a bit fibrous (is this endometrial lining?)

I should also add that I travelled from the UK to Asia nearly two weeks ago and I know in the past when I was still menstruating I would often get a period early when I crossed time zones, or it would affect my hormones in some way and in my experience I feel like 2 weeks has seemed to be the time it has taken for hormonal things to have a noticeable effect (ie like starting the patches), though this is just an idea I have and not necessarily the case.

My question is really whether it would be better to start the progesterone tonight, and not wait, and figure that the 6 week long cycle won't work for me or to stick it out until the date I was planning to start it and do that as it could be due to travel or due to the change in cycle itself and maybe it will settle down in subsequent cycles. The patch could also possibly be being affected by the heat where I am and that could be messing around with my hormones. Travel is not as simple as it used to be!

Any advice would be extremely welcome.

Thank you so much

If it was me I would wait a few days to see if this is the start of a period. If it is it might be too late for the utro this cycle.

Thank you Sheila. I should’ve put in my first post that i think i am virtually post menopausal my last ‘natural’ bleed was about six months before i started the hrt and couldn’t really be described as a period just v v light spotting really. periods had been like that for last couple of years, only every few / several months and barely there. So I doubt it will be a proper bleed (showing no sign of getting any heavier)
