Hysteroscopy & transvaginal scan
« on: May 17, 2023, 09:48:26 AM »

I'm post-menopausal for the last 7 years and I'm 56. On Oestrogel- 2 pumps, Utrogestan one a night, Testogel and Vagirux pessaries twice a week for vaginal dryness.

I was referred under the 2 week rule for a hysteroscopy and transvaginal scan because of a small amount of pinky/brown discharge/bleed.  it was hardly anything of note but I'd also felt the urge to wee quite often and period type pain.  Needless to say I have been terrified that its ovarian or endometrial cancer! GP did bloods and urine checks and all normal.

I had the investigations yesterday which went ok.  Transvaginal scan showed nothing of note except a very small fibroid, my womb lining was 5.1mm which they say is only slightly over the cut off for doing a hysteroscopy, but it was decided that it would be best to go ahead and have this done.

They said that everything looked normal on the hysteroscopy and took biopsies which I need to wait for the results.  But she mentioned there was a small amount of blood in the endometrial cavity she but didn't seem overly concerned.
But I am so terrified after googling this, that this is a symptom of endometrial cancer!  Dr google is not a friend sometimes  :(

I'm trying to take comfort that all the other investigations showed nothing but waiting for the biopsy results is going to drive me insane.

Hi Drew26

I've just seen your message and thought I would reply as I have been in the exact same situation this last few months. Light brown/pink bleeding intermittently for several weeks and low down abdo/bladder pain with some urinary symptoms.

I was also referred under the 2 week rule and had all the tests, tv scan, hysteroscooy etc. My lining was 7mm thick an I have a smal 2.8cm fibroid and some tiny polyps found. 4 weeks later I still haven't had the biopsy result but I would have hoped by now that if they new I had cancer I would have been called back in, so please don't worry too much.

My reason for replying is just to say your not alone and I think its very common for these issues to happen as many many posts on here say similar things about bleeding issues etc.

I'm still suffering the need to pee issues but everything is pointing towards a vaginal atrophy or what's now classed as Genitourinary Symptoms of Menopause and topical and/or systemic oestrogen is the treatment for this and as your already on this, maybe speak to your GP about increasing oestrogen or changing to Ovestin or Vagifem as topical treatment if your pessary is not effective.

I suffer with anxiety and the worse thing you can do is use Google, somehow you will always end up finding what you are googling referring to cancer and it just increases the anxiety so try not to do that, i know its hard. I've found it very comforting to explore on here and you will see your not alone and there are some very knowledgeable lovely ladies here.

I hope all comes back clear for you and you find some relief soon xx

Hi LisaJo, Thank you so much for your reply and words of reassurance, I really do appreciate this.  It really is scary and I've always found this forum such a help and support from all the lovely ladies on here.

Thank you for sharing your experience which sounds very much like my own, I think once the 2 week rule in mentioned you automatically think the worst, despite trying very hard to tell myself that at least this makes sure we get seen quickly and things like this are better dealt with fast.

I do think that it is more likely that its GSM/vaginal atrophy as I have lots of the symptoms for this, much as you describe.

I will speak to my GP once the biopsy results are back, I was using Vagifem but they changed this to Vagirux because they are more environmentally friendly because of the re-usable applicator, but  I wonder if perhaps another 2 week loading dose of vaginal oestrogen could help with maybe Ovestin thrown in?

Thank you and I hope that your biopsy results come back ok also. I think logically after 4 weeks, you think that it can't be anything sinister as you would have heard for sure by now.  So I'm trying to tell myself - no news is good news  :)

Thank you for your kind words

Fibroids can also cause bleeding so you have two possible non frightening causes for it. Try not to worry.

Hi Drew

Any news? My results took 6 weeks to come and all clear thankfully. How are your wee symptoms now? Mine are terrible everyday, I'm really struggling to walk, drive and wear underwear as everything creates a huge pain in my urethra area and I need to wee constantly. I've found ovestin really increases my symptoms so ive had to stop this.

So have you heard anything yet? Are you feeling any better and coping OK? X

Hi LisaJo,

Thanks so much for asking, you must be psychic, as I got a letter just yesterday to say all clear and no evidence of cancer :)  Such a huge relief is an understatement.
My wee symptoms seem to be a little better the last week or so. And I'm feeling much better in my head and less anxious now the tests are done and everything is ok.

You sound as though you are still struggling, what a shame that Ovestin isn't helping you, this minefield which is HRT is very tricky to navigate sometimes.

I hope you manage to find some help and relief from your ongoing problems too. Thanks so much for thinking of me.  The support on this forum is the best.

Hi Drew26

I'm so glad your in the clear, its such a huge relief to know isn't it, far too much anxiety going on at this time of life without thinking we have cancer! So happy your feeling better in yourself too and thanks for your kind words aswell.

I'm certain I've had a prolapse but my GP says not. I've made an appointment with a private urogynaecologist for next Friday as I can't function properly and need this sorted so will see what happens. Finding it hard to believe that VA can make me feel like my womb and bladder is dropping out! So I need an expert to confirm that's what it is and hopefully start to treat properly.

Thank so much for chatting, I'm so glad your feeling better and hope you continue to improve 💚

Thanks LisaJo, the relief to know their are no signs of cancer is massive, the horrible thoughts of it being something sinister affect every aspect of your life.  The overthinking drives you crazy.  But I am so much better now and thanks for your kind words of support too.

I'm so sorry that you are having to seek help privately from a urogynaecologist, it shouldn't need to be like this but I will be thinking of you, and hope that the coming week goes quickly so you can hopefully find some answers and relief.

Thanks for chatting too, I will check back with you to see how you got on.

Take care  :-*

LisaJo my VA was at the beginning as you describe, struggle to sit, walk and wear underwear. I also thought how can it be this bad and was convinced something else was going on.....it wasn't. Just wanted to let you know, it can be this bad unfortunately.  I hope you soon get some answers 🥰 xxx
