Colonoscopy prep
« on: May 09, 2023, 04:40:42 PM »

Have colonoscopy next month, morning appointment. Was told to take moviprep at 5 and 8 which means will likely be on the loo until midnight easily. I'm a real early bird, get up at 6 amd and bed for 9.  Also take my utrogestan at 9pm I'd prefer to start taking the moviprep early in the day eg at 2 and 5 and be pretty much cleared out by bed time so utrogestan is absorbed correctly and I get a nights sleep. I'm very prone to insomnia, even when I miss a night so trying to avoid not sleeping that night if can. I can't see any reason why it's not possible. I'd only be drinking liquids anyway and would be stopping drinking at 8pm ish so if I'm cleared out,I'm cleared out, albeit a few hours earlier than advised? Anyone done similar? Ill ring them to check but afraid be just speaking to a receptionist who will advise sticking religiously to the instructions ,even if there's no  real logic to them.

I think the reason they tell you to start at 5pm is because it has to be a number of hours after your last meal ie lunch. So if you take it at 2pm your breakfast will be your last meal til after the colonoscopy the next day.

My husband took it at 5pm and 8pm and was still dashing to the loo at midnight so not sure if the progesterone would get absorbed properly anyway. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along with advice. Good luck.

I'll ring to ask, either way I'm going to take a few hours earlier than they ask. I'll also eat breakfast a few hours earlier  so that should have me covered. I came across  something from a UK hospital that mentioned taking moviprep 6 hours after food so If I eat at 7am, I could maybe start taking at 2 or 3. And again at 5.   I can't be the only person who has to take medication at nighttime so wonder how they get around that in general.

This info says to try to take evening medication after 9 pm. Not sure if it's useful https://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/health-information/colonoscopy-diet-advice-and-bowel-preparation/1-day-your-colonoscopy

I'd go by what your particular hospital has said then. They know what they're doing and there's obviously a reason for the specific timings. Whatever you decide I hope it all goes well  :)
