Progesterone post hysterectomy?
« on: May 08, 2023, 08:18:53 AM »

After a conscious effort to get heard over a couple of years, I now am fortunate to have access to a decent GP (albeit on a long wait time) who understands my symptoms and my research and my choices in HRT and to date has supported them.
I had a total hysterectomy in 2009, still have ovaries (though no idea how functioning they are!) and at end 2021 was prescribed oestrogen (oestrogel), end 2022 testosterone (Tostran) and local oestrogen (vagifem).
I have been so much better than I was but in the last few months have had some significant dips/reverts with mood, anxiety, sleep and some joint pain etc.
Thinking that progesterone may be the missing link - does anyone relate to this experience?
I have a five minute phone consult booked for a fortnight’s time and wondered whether to address/suggest progesterone. The only time progesterone was mentioned was at the beginning and she said I didn’t need it as I have no womb.
Thanks in advance for your advice/guidance.

Sounds more like oestrogen deficiency to me. What dose are you on and where are you on your meno journey? It could be that you need more as your own production dwindles.

Thanks for your response Sheila.
I’m taking 2-3 pumps of Oestrogel daily, Tostran 3x week, Vagifem 2x week. This has been my routine for about c8 mths. Mostly feel tons better - killer symptoms were joint and muscle pains, fatigue, insomnia, low moods … with flushes and night sweats to boot … and HRT has really really helped with this.
The last few months anxiety has crept in and been a real shocker as never known anything like it despite life’s challenges.
Meno journey? No idea. As mentioned above, hysterectomy 14 yrs ago and must’ve had 8-9 years of bliss before symptoms started creeping in. I’d put them down to stress and ageing initially before joining dots so could’ve been peri for years. Then delayed acting on problematic symptoms  during covid and the last 18 months have been slowly adding treatments (see initial post) with support of a good but thoroughly overstretched gp.
I did have someone point me to https://www.bodylogicmd.com/blog/the-benefits-of-progesterone-treatment-after-hysterectomy but unsure if it’s a sensible route. Don’t want to waste gp’s time nor my precious five min consultation so trying to seek opinion and info from all quarters.
Thanks in advance.
