Utrogestan and Side Effect of Joint Pain Kicking In.
« on: June 16, 2023, 02:36:12 PM »

Hi

Just looking for some advice and not sure what to do for the best.

I am Post Menopausal, about 10 years and I am giving HRT a go. My symptoms are waking up most mornings with nausea and anxiety which comes and go. The anxiety has become debilitating and has a huge effect on my work and day to day life (driving, socialising) Both of these symptoms appeared out of nowhere about 9 months ago.

I am about 5 weeks in to taking continuous 100mg Utrogestan and one pump of Oestrogel. Besides some bloating the first week I still feel nauseous most mornings I wake up but that has gone from “pretty bad” to “not so bad” and seems to wear off quicker than without HRT and there is definitely an improvement with my anxiety which is great.

Unfortunately, over the past week I am starting to get sore joint pain in my hips which is new to me.

Would increasing the Oestrogel to 2 pumps help? The Utrogestan leaflet does highlight joint pain as a side effect so I’m not sure if it will wear off.

I really don’t want to stop the HRT because it is overall helping my symptoms.

Many thanks.

Fi

Hello and welcome to the forum. Often joint pain can be a sign of low oestrogen.  They do say to give HRT 3 months before you know if it will be the right dosage but personally, I would increase the oestrogen to another pump. :)

Thank you for your advice.

I just find it odd that the joint pain has only started since taking HRT.

You could try a different progesterone? Perhaps ultrogestan does not agree with you.

It's possible it's just coincidence but I would give it a bit longer and see if it settles. Oestrogen stopped my joint pain. As you've been so long without oestrogen I would stick to the current dose until the 3 months, building up gradually is best and particularly when your body isn't used to it.

I did try Evorel Conti 50 patches for 3 months prior to the regime I am on at the moment but they didn’t help with any of my menopausal symptoms. I did get a sore back when taking the Evorel Conti patches and as soon as I stopped using them the back pain disappeared.

I just hope I’m not intolerant to any Progesterone.

It can take time to find the right progesterone but do not worry as you have tried two but there are other options. This is a link which shows all the different HRT preparations.

I will probably persevere with my current regime and see if it improves over the next few weeks. My daily
walks were helping my mental and physical health but over the past week I haven’t managed any walks due to the pain in my hips…

It is so frustrating that HRT has a positive effect with something and then a negative effect on something else >:(

It can be a slow and frustrating process, my worst symptoms were anxiety and insomnia and they both took the full 3 months to go. If you think utro may be causing it you might consider a period on only oestrogen - safe for a trial but obviously not long term.

I am just assuming it’s the Utrogestan because joint pain is highlighted as a side effect in the information pack. When you say a trial…how long?

Hello Oldshoremore68 and welcome to the forum.

You have had some excellent suggestions but it may be worth considering another cause of your hip pain. Is it possible that your walks have brought this on? Are you walking on difficult terrain or wearing unsuitable footwear? Could you have a little arthritis that has been exacerbated by the walking?

Apologies if this all sounds silly but perhaps talk to your GP as there may be an effective treatment that doesn't require you to change your HRT.

Take care.

K.
