Transdermal to oral?
« on: March 21, 2023, 09:37:49 AM »

Hi

Has anyone swapped from transdermal hrt to oral and felt a difference?

Been on patches for almost a year and still feel utter rubbish so starting to think I'm maybe not absorbing them. Was considering asking for oral hrt to see if it makes a difference but wanted to see if anyone had experience of this first?

Thanks x

Tell us which HRT regime you have been prescribed, it may be possible to halve a patch a few times a week, tweaking dosage often helps.

Which symptom would you like to ease first?

Started on evorel 25 + 200mg utrogestan days 15-26 in May 22. Then increased to evorel 50, then evorel 75 in November 22. I haven't ever felt better mentally. It's sorted the hot flushes and night sweats but nothing else. Still feel sad all the time, no motivation, hair loss, joint aches and pains despite brisk 30 minute walks every other day, anxiety. These things have never changed. I'm reluctant to increase to the 100 patch as I feel disheartened and it won't do anything.

MayB time to consider appropriate anti-depressant medication and something to ease anxiety.  HRT isn't the cure that it's hyped up to be so some require it along with other medications.  How's your VITD levels.

If it's controlling your flushes then usually, though not always, it's the right dose. Other symptoms may take 3 months to go. Unfortunately many meno symptoms can have other causes and it may be that you're right to think more oestrogen won't help. Did they pre date peri? If they did it's unlikely hrt will cure them. How is your libido? If it's low testosterone may be worth a try, it helped my motivation and muscle tone. My libido was zero.

I have suffered with depression on and off since having my 2nd child 13 years ago. I was on antidepressants from 2010 until 2020. I haven't suffered since. But you may be right, that this is something else. I don't feel 'depressed' as such (knowing what true depression feels like) just really sad for no reason. And I didn't feel like this prior to being diagnosed as peri. Which was early last year. I didn't feel any of this prior to that point. My libido is great actually, better than it ever has been! Not sure about vit D levels CLKD, never been tested. I have a gp appt on Thursday so could request bloods for that. Anything else I should be tested for that might explain these symptoms? Although I do feel it's peri that's causing them as like I said prior to early last year I felt great.

Just to add a vote for getting your thyroid levels checked (and the others CLKD has said). I agree with Sheila that if you've seen improvement in hot flushes that it could be something else. Hormonal changes have a lot of domino effects in the body (thyroid is a classic example) so definitely worth at least ruling other things out before making a switch xx
