Estrogel- should I increase? Help please
« on: March 17, 2023, 08:36:51 PM »

Hello ladies

Need some advice please.

Quick overview- I’ve been on HRT for 9 years (nearly 55) and possibly post meno but hard to know due to coils, POP etc in late 40s.

I was on 3 pumps of gel no flushing but no sleep and feeling ‘unwell’ . I struggled to find a suitable fit for prog as can’t tolerate utro so switched to Femoston 2/10 for one month. This had suited in pre gel days over 3 years ago.

I didn’t feel I was absorbing and struggled so after only one month (I know 🙄) I panicked and returned to gel 3 pumps. 3/4 weeks along having day time flushes (just about manageable) but awful night sweats waking me up early hours every night. I increased to 3.5 pumps 2 weeks and now on 4 pumps. Still flushing! Still night sweats!

I’m shocked as the 3 pumps just s while ago meant no flushes but it’s not cutting it now.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I know I ought to stick to 4 for a date few weeks but the night drenches are unbearable and had a return of the awful dizziness I had prior to any HRT 9 years ago.

I’m going to get bloods done next week pre gel application to see what my body is holding on to.

Not sure what to do! Wait? Increase to 4.5?

Thanks for any help you can give xx

Hi bluebellstar, and a warm welcome. Sorry to hear you are struggling.

If the blood test shows you aren't absorbing, would you consider trying patches? I could never get on with either of the gels. Did you use the utro orally or vaginally?

Hi to you both and thank you for the lovely welcome 🌸

CLKD thank you- just searching now!
Lots of reading to do.

Joaniepat thank you!
I would drink snake oil to get some normality 🤣. I did try patches and actually was ok but made the mistake of getting bloods done and was at about 50 pmol on Estradot  100 and then Everol about 250 pmol. Strangely, didn’t seem to be flushing. And I far preferred the Estradot as Everol made me feel headachey. However, I was on ADs at the time and I’m now thinking it was them blocking the flushes. Either way, I should have stuck with patches. I panicked as my levels seemed too low. It also suggests I wasn’t producing much of my own so I could very well now be post meno.

I’m going to check bloods to see if I’m getting any. I’ve always assumed I absorbed gel (it worked well for 2.5 years after tablets) but maybe it was just my own estrogen carrying me through?? I’m wondering if I might have fallen off the estrogen cliff now?
I’m sitting here melting in gloop with a flush so I would definitely try patches again. I do find the application of gel a faff.

Also wondering if it’s ‘running out’ at night. Maybe spiking on morning application and then zips off. Arrgh! I’ve tried splitting but it seems to affect sleep.

Thank you both- you’ve got me thinking! Xx

Good luck and let us know how you get on. I always think patches give a more even dose. I'm on Estradot 100, putting a new patch on every 3 days, but leaving the old one on for four days (determined to screw every last drop out of it!). You have to find what works for you 😊.

Thanks JP

Meant to say utro vaginally. I’m going to persist with it for a while to see if I can tolerate.
I much preferred Estradot too! The Everol wrecked my skin and left almost like burn marks was awful. But I seemed to get more from them. I’m tempted to put one on today (have some stock) but I know the best thing is to check bloods and see what’s going on first.

I agree about the even dosing though- much better! I’ve never really liked the gel- application, smell, the one hit etc but I need to hold tight a couple of weeks until bloods are through. I’m definitely feeling on the rollercoaster at the moment. Moods switching all over the place so something is ‘off’.

I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for help and support! We all just want to feel steady and normal. I know it will pass 🤞 xx
