Ovestin cream question please
« on: May 05, 2025, 07:22:24 AM »

Hi
I am 53 and feel like most of my menapause symptoms are going away now. I’m definitely over the worst. The only thing I have is vaginal atrophy with severe itching. This has been going on for 7years. I was given dermovate from the docs for it but I hardly use it as I’m worried about steroid use in that area. After a bad week of itching I contacted doctor who gave me ovestin vaginal cream ( I’m not on any hrt) I started it on Friday and by Saturday afternoon I had bright red cheeks and I burst into tears as I felt so down. Sunday I had boils coming up on my face and today I am sweating and feel down again. I know I’m super sensitive to progesterone and luckily I don’t need it with this cream but I didn’t expect to feel like this with a cream. I was so looking forward to not itching but I can’t feel down. The spots I can deal with but I never cry these days and to go back to those  feelings of sadness  is too much for me I think. Has anyone else had this after such a short time? Does it get better? Tia

It's a bit of a coincidence however your body may be sensitive to the fillers/packaging rather than the active ingredient.  Do U have any KY Jelly to moisten the area?  Stop the ovestin to allow the delicate vaginal walls to recover, mayB try vagifem - same idea with inserting into the vagina.

Hi I can’t help with the reaction I’m sorry but I had a diagnosis of VA years ago now after lots of itching and also Vulval Dermatitis. I was given Dermovate ointment too and Vagifem pessaries which really helped. A sexual health doctor prescribed hydramol as a barrier ointment which I apply a few times a day after having a pee and this has really helped me it’s like the texture of Vaseline. I was given Cetamacrogol cream to wash with(very similar to E45 wash) instead of just water and I think this has helped too. I hope you get things sorted out it’s really horrible having this itching let alone all the other reactions you have had to the cream.

While what I say isn't going to be helpful I don't think, your post has been helpful to me because I recently became very depressed and was getting a lot of flushing.

It's under my post about menopause and mental health.  2 things had changed, one was I started using ovestin 2 days prior to this depression episode, out of the blue and with no triggers.  The other thing I can't remember, I think it was use of sleeping pill and then stopping.

I concluded after thinking it all through that it was the ovestin.  I was on estriol before that but a much lower dose.  I have a thread about that too.  I have since lowered my dose of ovestin right down, burning cheeks have stopped and mental health back to normal, which for me is usually reasonably cheerful.

So I'm not sure if this helps you, but felt I should say this in case it's the ovestin, even though vaginal cream is not a systemic treatment.  Don't be put off other creams, I did not have this with a much lower dose estriol cream or with vagifem.
